Weedsport, NY – July 16, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, Cayuga County Fair Speedway PR Director
Cayuga County Fair Speedway closes down for the upcoming weekend of racing before re-opening on the final Sunday in July for the annual invasion of the ASCS Patriot Sprints.
The popular Weedsport, NY oval sits idle on Sunday, July 22 in lieu of the big Budweiser tripleheader across town at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park. Action takes place the following weekend at CCFS with A-Verdi Storage Container presenting the Patriot Sprints along with a complete card of DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds, UMP Street Stocks, BattleKarz, Mini Sprints and Mod Lites. Race time is 7 p.m.
The action at Cayuga County has been dynamic in the Big-Block Modified ranks, with a full-field of talented young stars on the threshold of overtaking the veteran short-track chauffeurs in their rise to the top. So far 23 year-old speedster Billy Dunn and 27 year-old standout Justin Haers have been able to break the supremacy established by points leader Jimmy Phelps and Danny Johnson, each with three wins, while upstarts Derrick Podsiadlo, Chad Homan and Rob Bellinger look to etch their names in the CCFS record book.
Just 11 points separate the top-three Sportsman title contenders with the trio of Shawn Donath (3), Joe Williams (2) and Jeremy Pitcher (2) taking checkered flags in eight of the initial 10 feature races. Mike Mahaney, who stands fifth in points behind Tim Currier, and Jim Spano own the other first-place trophies through mid-July.
Nationally recognized UMP Street Stock points chaser Dave Mannise (3 wins) has moved in to challenge Nick Rizzo (2) for Cayuga County’s own season championship, while Jim Wallace (1) and Steve Woodworth continue to shadow the leaders every Sunday at The Port.
Cayuga County’s full-fender competition doesn’t end there as BattleKarz competitors showcase the entry level class of stock cars filling the card in 2007. June ‘Driver of the Month’ Bill Werner (3 wins) holds a narrow lead over brother Karl Werner (2) while Bill’s son Nick Werner (1) cements the family stronghold atop the mid-season points chart.
With the racing season already beginning to wind down on the Central New York circuit, 5-PAK ticket packages remain available for all regular events at Cayuga County and sister track Canandaigua Speedway. Providing a great deal for fans, each 5-PAK of tickets can be purchased for $48.00 which results in the receipt of (1) free ticket. The regular show admission is just $12 for adults (15-64 yrs.), $10 for Seniors (65 yrs. & older) and $5 for youths (10-14 yrs.) while children 9 yrs. & under are free.
