Vacarro gets 1st 410 Fremont win; Brubaker nabs 1st career 305 victory; Ward notches 5th truck win

FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, July 21, 2007) - Castalia's Troy Vaccaro has won in
modifieds on asphalt. He was a dominate force in 305 sprint racing on the
dirt, including winning the 1997 Fremont Speedway championship. But in his
years of 410 sprint racing, he has struggled. However, it all came together
Saturday on Beck Oil Night at "The Track That Action Built," as he led all
30 laps for his first career victory in the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410
Sprints.
Not to be outdone, Helena's Stuart Brubaker outdueled Benny Bowman, Chris
Lang and a fast-closing Kevin Lee to nab his first career victory in the
Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints.
Current Fremont Fence Dirt Truck point leader Cory Ward came out on top of a
tremendous three-way battle for the lead late in the race with Jim McGrath
and Danny Roepke. It was Ward's fifth win of the season at Fremont.
For Vaccaro, the win justified turning down the "Deal" - to move from his
pole starting position to 13th for a chance at winning a $2,500 bonus.
"The track was fast and it would have been hard in this competition to pass
that many cars. I have to thank all the people who have stuck with me over
these last six years. We won a lot of races in modifieds and 305s...we
weren't used to struggling like this.This is a credit to all the hard work
of my crew," said Vaccaro in the Engine Pro Victory Lane beside his
Precision Body & Frame, Excuses Lounge, Pizza House West backed #7t.
In the 25-lap 305 sprint feature, the last 8 laps featured side by side
battles for the lead. Brubaker, who started sixth, grabbed the lead for good
on lap 22.
"That was one heck of a battle. It's been a long four years and I wasn't
going to let this one slip away. At times you get discouraged because you
get so close to winning," said Brubaker from the Engine Pro Victory Lane
next to his Brubaker Auctioneer, Fisher Welding & Fabrication sponsored #35.
"I have to thank my wife, my crew and my mom for all their support and
encouragement."
Things didn't heat up in the 20-lap dirt truck feature until the last five
laps. Danny Roepke and ward banged doors for awhile, and then Jim McGrath
got in the mix. Ward would lead lap 16, with McGrath holding the slight
advantage on lap 17. Ward would take the top spot for good on lap 18.
"Danny and I have banged doors before and he came away with the win. It was
my turn to do that to him," said Ward beside his Budweiser, Lakefront
Drywall, Hiser's Transmissions, Blue Chip Machine & Tool, East Side Cafe
backed #18w.
Vaccaro would grab the lead at the drop of the green in the 410 sprint
feature, with Bobby Clark, who also turned down the "Deal", Chris Andrews,
Lee Jacobs and Brandon Martin in tow. The only caution of the race would fly
on lap 4 for a Gus Wasson spin.
Vaccaro would set sail, while the battle heated up behind him between Clark,
Jacobs, Martin, Andrews and David Harrison. Vaccaro would hit lapped traffic
on lap 11, allowing Clark and Jacobs to close. Those three would run nose to
tail until lap 24 when Jacobs would move into second. As the laps wound
down, Jacobs closed on Vaccaro who was having some difficulty in lapped
traffic.
At the checkered Vaccaro won by 3 car lengths over Jacobs, with Clark,
Martin and Greg Wilson rounding out the top five.
Chris Lang would grab the lead from his third starting spot at the drop of
the green for the 305 sprint feature, with Bowman, Aaron Moloney, Brubaker
and Brad Keckler in tow. The only yellow would fly on lap 4 for a Dustin
Keegan spin, with the running order the same for the top five. However, all
eyes were on Kevin Lee in his new ride, the Jason Deel-owned 3J. The Green
Springs driver, who won last week at Fremont, destroyed his car Friday night
at Attica, and was up to 10th from his 17th starting position.
Lang pulled away when racing resumed, with Bowman comfortably in second and
Brubaker moving into third by lap 8, with Dan Hammond and Matt Lucius
rounding out the top five. Bowman would drive under Lang for the lead on lap
13, with Brubaker still third. Lang would fight back to lead laps 14 and 15,
with bowman retaking the top spot on lap 16.
Brubaker would move into second on lap 18, with Lang and now Lee not far
behind. With just five laps remaining, Bowman had his hands full with
Brubaker. Brubaker and Bowman raced side by side as they hit lapped traffic
on lap 22, with Brubaker taking the top spot and a closing Lee moving into
third.
Brubaker would take the checkered over Bowman, Lee, Lang and Hammond.
Gibsonburg's Danny Roepke, who has 22 career Fremont wins, would grab the
lead in the dirt truck feature, with rookie Zack Kramer , Paul Brown Jr.,
Alex Wiechman and Bob Dible right on his rear bumper. Roepke would continue
to lead with no challenge while the real battle was behind. Moving through
the field were 10th-starting McGrath and 12th starting Ward.
At the half-way mark of the 20-lap feature, Roepke lead over McGrath, Ward,
Kramer, Brown and Wiechman. Ward would move into second on lap 12 and he and
Roepke would trade paint the next four laps before ward took the top spot.
Roepke and a closing McGrath would make it a three-way battle the remaining
four laps.
Ward held off McGrath for the win, with Roepke, 11th-starter Steve Endicott
and Dwight Waltermeier rounding out the top five.
In a bit of sad news, Jim Ford, who returned "The Track That Action Built"
back to prominence eight years ago, announced this would be his last as the
promoter of Fremont Speedway. No announcement was made of who would take
over the reins.
It was also announced the last race of the season, Saturday, Sept. 15, will
feature pay the 410 sprint feature winner $13,000 ($600 to start), though
Ford hinted that may increase over the coming weeks. The finale will also
feature increased purses for the 305 sprints and dirt trucks. More details
on this special race will be released in the coming weeks.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 28 on Custom Chrome
Plating Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action.
The "Deal of No Deal" option for the front row of the Fort Ball Pizza Palace
410 sprints' feature will still be effect - pole-sitter moves from 1st to
13th starting spot, wins and collects a $2,500 bonus for a potential $5,000
payday (option goes to second place starter if pole-sitter takes "No Deal.")
Also, thanks to the Tackle Box II, five bikes will be handed out in a random
draw to kids 10 and under! And, hot dogs will be two for $1!
