SATURDAY NIGHT: $20,000 SUMMER NATIONALS FINALE TO SCHATZ
MECHANICSBURG, PA -- Donny Schatz completed a memorable week with a
$20,000 victory in the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals for sprint
cars presented by Advance Auto Parts and sanctioned by the World of
Outlaws Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
The 29-year old Fargo, ND, resident began the week with a victory
in the King's Royal at Ohio's Eldora Speedway on July 14, then followed
it with a win on Wednesday in the Silver Cup at Western Pa.'s
Lernerville Speedway. He won at Williams Grove Thursday before being
forced to settle for sixth on Friday.
The defending World of Outlaws champion and current point leader
came back with a vengeance Saturday night to win the Summer Nationals
finale and push his week's earning's
to well over $100,000.
Schatz took the lead at the start from Paul McMahan and looked as
if he would cruise to an easy victory over the 30-lap distance. But
Steve Kinser had other ideas. The 20-time WoO champion started sixth,
took the runnerup spot from Joey Saldana on lap nine and began to close
on Schatz.
With heavy traffic slowing the frontrunners Kinser made his move on
the backstretch on lap 24 and drew alongside the leade. But Schatz
withstood the challenge and held on for his 4th victory of the season at
Williams Grove and the 13th of his career at this historic half-mile.
Kinser settled for second 78 hundredths of a second off Schatz's pace.
McMahan, Saldana and Danny Lasoski completed the top five ahead of
Doug Esh, Lucas Wolfe, Jeff Shepard, Tim Shaffer and Daryn Pittman.
Terry McCarl came from 20th to finish 11th and earned the hard
charger award.
Heats for the 44 cars in competition were won by Saldana, Schatz,
McMahan and Wolfe.
McMahan won the Crane Cams Dash.
The B-main went to Jason Meyers and Jac Haudenschild claimed the C.
Williams Grove Speedway will host Kids Night on July 27 with sprint
cars and limited (358 c.i.) sprints as the featured attractions.
