BROCKVILLE-For the first time in a month, it didn't rain on Saturday night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. That was just what the doctor ordered for a near capacity crowd and a bunch of hungry race car drivers, who at the end of the night were dealing with a very tricky and dry racing surface. Danny O Brien and Jason Riddell scored the big victories in the 358 Modified and Sportsman divisions respectively at the Beast of the East.
Chris Jones roared off into the early lead in the Modified feature, only to have Adam Moore reel him back in after a restart with Stephane LaFrance in tow. Danny O Brien arrived near the front around the midway part of the race and began picking off the leaders one by one eventually grabbing the lead in the last 10 laps and then pulling out to a comfortable lead in scoring his second feature win of 2007. Pat O Brien made one of his semi regular visits to Brockville and saw his average finish plummett from 1 to 1.33 as he settled for second, LaFrance was third with Moore and Mark Hitchcock rounding out the top five.
Things were easier for Riddell, who started on the front row of the 20 lap Sportsman feature and led wire to wire fending off a late challenge from Randy Earl. Bob Albright was third followed by Chris Herbison. Herbison started in the final row as he returned to the Sportsman ranks after acquiring a new ride. Sheldon Hoogwerf picked up the fifth spot.
The Rookie and Street Stock winners got the most of out of their cars literally. Steve Billings picked up the winners laurels in the 15 lap Street Stock feature and then broke something on the car when doing a celebration donut on the back straight after the checkered flag. Brock Cullen was second in front of Bob McKeown, Derrick Eaton and Roger Hamilton. John Johnson started smoking out the rear of the car with about 5 laps to go but managed to hold on for the victory in the 16 lap Rookie feature despite a last lap challenge from Jessica Power. However, his Honda had to be pushed to victory lane after dying on the front stretch on the cool down lap. Adam Trickey was third followed across the line by Chris Bakker and Steven Laplante.
Ben Tucker scored another win in the 12 lap McNamee Concreate Vintage feature. Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action on Saturday night, July 28th with the Lucas Oil Canadian DIRT Challenge Series coming to town with a 100 lap main event for the 358 Modifieds. This will be the second event in the five race series that combines the best drivers from Eastern Ontario with their Quebec counterparts. The first two races scheduled for last week in la Belle Province were rained out. Time trials are scheduled for 6:30 with race time at 7 pm. Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies will also be in action.
