Nelson Scores Second Consecutive Feature at the Ridge

Posted by National Editor  |  07/23/07

FULTONVILLE, NY – Sometimes when a driver hits on the right setup it can lead to very good things.

On Friday night at the New Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, Erik Nelson used the very same setup that propelled him to victory lane last week to score his second consecutive victory at the quarter-mile oval in the 35-lap Modified feature.

“I’ve missed a few races and I’m trying to make up for lost time,” laughed Nelson in victory lane. “We’ve found the right setup for here and it’s great.”

Mike Bellinger took the lead as racing action got underway aboard his no. 21b but surrendered it on the second circuit to Robert King.

King led until a lap three the caution came out as Randy Hotaling spun in turn four. On the restart, King decided to go to the outside while Nelson pulled alongside down low. When the green came out, Nelson beat King into turn one to secure the lead.

Nelson held off King as he attempted to take the lead back on the outside for several laps with Nelson never moving off the bottom.

“I wasn’t going to get off the bottom,” said Nelson. “If anyone wanted to pass me they were going to have to get around me on the outside.

“If they could do that they were a better man than I am.”

The caution came out on lap 28 giving the field one more opportunity to get by Nelson but it was to no avail as he claimed his third win of the season.

King held on to finish in second while Ray Zemken came home third. Jamike Sowle brought his no. 711 home in the fourth spot and Craig Hanson rebounded from a flat tire to late in the event to finish fifth.

In the 20-lap Budget Sportsman feature event, ‘Happy’ Harry Shaffer picked up the victory. Shaun Pangman jumped out in front after starting fourth on the grid and led the first eight laps.

On lap 9, Pangman bobbled allowing Kale Groff to slide by for the lead on the inside of turn four.

Shaffer, who started ninth, patiently sat in the second spot after Goff took the lead. Then, on lap 12, Goff stopped on the back straightaway giving Shaffer the top spot.

Shaffer worked the inside lane and led the final eight laps to score the win over Joe Duncan, Butchie Irwin, Ken Carson and Pangman.
Darrel Older captured the first 12-lap Pure Stock feature with Dave Bayes capturing the second.
Chance Smigel won the 20-lap Cruiser feature event.
