Bo Feathers, Winchester, VA, has been one of the hottest drivers in the east this season and he proved it with his dominating performance during the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series (MACS) ‘Bedford MACS Attack 50’ at Keifer Motorsports’ Bedford Speedway.
World of Outlaws Late Models Series regular Rick Eckert and Feathers brought the field to green with Feathers catapulting into the lead. Feathers pulled away as Eckert and fifth starting Jeremy Miller battled for the runner-up position. Miller made the pass for second as local favorite Jeff Rine moved into the fourth on lap five.
As action started to pick up throughout the field, 2002 MACS Champion Jack Pencil coasted to a stop to bring out the evening’s first caution. The former champion’s night was over with a broken rear axle. When racing resumed Feathers continued to lead with Miller and Eckert in tow over Rine and Greg Fetters. Bo was in total control of the event when the second of six cautions flew when ‘Bedford Brigade’ member Steve Everhart came to a halt in turn four on lap 19.
On the ensuing restart a false start caused a major mêlée involving Gary Stuhler, 2007 MACS ROY contender Matt Lux, Rod Conley, 2006 WRISCO Aluminum MACS ROY, Nick Dickson, and D.J. Troutman. Stuhler and Troutman pitted ending their chances.
When racing resumed, Feathers again displayed his prowess pulling away from the field. The racing was short-lived however because as the fourth caution fell, this time for 2005 MACS Champion, Mike Balzano who came to a rest in turn four with a flat right rear tire.
When the green waved again it was still Feathers leading Miller and Eckert while 2004 MACS Champion Rob Blair and Ron Delano, Jr. battled side-by-side for fourth. Blair was able to hold of Delano ’s challenge as 17th starting and 2006 MACS Champion Jason Covert joined the fray hounding Delano for fifth. The strong run for Ron came to a sudden halt on lap 28 when his right rear tire went flat bringing out the next caution.
The final caution flew for WoO regular Josh as he coasted to a stop on lap 35. Feathers regrouped the field with Miller, Eckert, Blair and Covert all giving chase. That would be the closest any of the contenders would get to the fleet leader as he again pulled away from the field.
At the checkers, Feathers handily won as Miller was second, over Rick Eckert, Covert and Blair as this duo had a spirited battle back and forth to the finish. Bedford regular Greg Fetters led the local effort with a very solid sixth place finish over Lux, 15th starting Scott Rhodes, Jim Bernheisel, from 22nd, and Balzano, who recovered from his early flat to finish tenth.
