Ferree wins Lucky #7, Lambert and Shingledecker win their third, Priester breaks long drought!

Posted by Late Model Editor  |  07/23/07

Somebody forgot to tell the Friedman’s Freshmarkets Late Model drivers that the demo derby was scheduled after the Fab Four Racing was complete. To say the least, the 25-lap A-main feature event was caution ridden. However, for the seventh time this season, Alex Ferree, (#4) of Saxonburg, took the checkers and rolled into Victory Lane. It’s hard to fathom, but it had been almost two full months since he last won a feature. Ferree took the lead from Ken Schaltenbrand, (#29) of Sarver, on lap seven, but hardly ran away with the win. Jared Miley, (#H1) of South Park, was on Ferree’s heels the entire race and finished in second. Matt Lux, (#21) of Franklin, only made the A-main by transferring through the B-main. The transfer resulted in a 21st starting spot for Lux, but he charged his way through the field, gaining a few positions each caution and finishing an hard earned third. Early race leader Kenny Schaltenbrand finished fourth, while Dave Murdick, driving the Pitkavish #1, rounded out the top five.

Lynn Geisler, (#1C) of Cranberry, was running third on lap seven and moving forward, trying to win for his sponsor Bolea Oil, tonight’s Fab Four Racing sponsor. Unfortunately on lap seven, Geisler and Dave Murdick made contact on the back straightaway. The contact sent Geisler spinning into turn three and off the backside of the track. Geisler recovered to finish seventh. Heat races were won by Ferree, Boom Briggs, (#99) of Bear Lake, and Rick Strong (#S1) of Chamberville. Keith Barbara of Pittsburgh won the B-main in the Drew Koteles #64K

The Ferrante Motor Cars Modifieds rumbled onto the track second tonight. Jeremiah Shingledecker, (#37MD) of Stoneboro took the lead from J.R. McGinley on the second lap and led the next 18 laps. But neither Dave Murdick, (#61) of Slippery Rock, nor Del Rougeux Jr., (#20D) of Stoneboro, were about to let him walk away with the 25 lap feature. Rougeux, who was been getting faster as the season has progressed, assumed the lead on lap 20 and led until the white flag. Rougeux and Shingledecker raced door to door, with Shingledecker prevailing to capture his third feature win of the season. Rougeux was second, followed by Murdick and McGinley, (#66) of Fairmount City.

Brian Swartzlander, (#83) of Leechburg, finished an impressive fifth place after starting from the tail of the field as a result of using a backup car for the feature. The use of the backup car was necessitated by the horrific crash Swartzlander amazingly walked away from earlier in the night. Dueling door to door with Rougeux in the heat race, the cars made contact launching Swartzlander off of the apex of turns three & four and violently into the concrete barrier near the pit gate. Heat races were claimed by Rougeux and McGinley

Pushing off third tonight were the Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprint Cars led to the stripe by newcomers Doug Dodson, (#43) of Mechanicsburg, and Scott Lutz, (#33L) of Fredericksburg. Dodson led the first lap that was marred by two separate flips. Robbie Bartchy, (#29) of Saxonburg, and Mike Lutz, (#15) of New Castle, both got upside down, bringing out red flags on lap one and on the first lap one restart. Scott Priester, (#11) of Rimersburg, took the lead on the second restart and ran away with his first win of the millennium! Priester stated in Victory Lane that his last Lernerville win came way back in 1999. Priester was never challenged, and enjoyed a full straightaway lead for the majority of the race. Ed Lynch Jr., (#2L) of Apollo, took only four laps to climb into second place, but could not find a line that allowed him to make up ground on the determined Priester. Dan Kuriger, (#08) of Freedom, continued to improve and impress tonight. He finally avoided the gremlins that have sabotaged him in weeks past to win his heat race and finish a career best third behind Priester and Lynch. Carl Bowser, (#10) of Sarver, held off Rod George, (#4) of Kittanning for fourth place. George started 12th by virtue of winning the last Fab Four race on July 6. George typically runs well on slick tracks, and did so again tonight to finish fifth. Kuriger, Lynch, and Dan Shetler, (#98) of Johnstown won heat races.

The Advance Auto Parts Pure Stocks took the track for tonight’s Main Event. Butch Lambert, (#27) of Mars, and Mike Pegher Jr., (#09) of Wexford, started on the front row, and finished just as they started, with Lambert prevailing to win his third race of the season. Like we’ve seen on so many occasions this season in this division, Lambert and Pegher raced each other clean but close for fifteen laps, swapping the lead on multiple occasions. Pegher’s second place finish maintained his streak of finishing in the top five every race this season. The only other driver to accomplish that feat so far this year is Alex Ferree. Bob Egley, (#30) of Kittanning, chased the lead duo home to finish third. Wayne Carbo, (#54) of Saxonburg, won the Stover’s Net Connections Hard Charger Award by finishing fourth after starting 11th. Joe Kelley, (#66) of Greensburg, rounded out tonight’s top five. Heat race checkered flags were captured by Lambert, Carbo, and Bob Lipinski, (#55L) of Pittsburgh. Dave “Brew” Baker won the Pure Stock B-main.

A Compact Car Demo Derby capped off the night. Just four cars showed up, but they put on an entertaining show. Dave Seibert, (#C04), of Gibsonia survived the carnage to win the derby. Dale “Stormin’” Gorman of Creighton outlasted Chadwick Hoculock and Pete Blazczak for the runner-up spot.

Don’t forget to tune in to ESPN2 this Sunday at noon to watch the one hour replay of Wednesday night’s Cleveland Brother CAT Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup XVI. The Silver Cup is the sixth race of ESPN2’s “SuperClean Summer of Money” series which airs every Sunday late morning/early afternoon.

Up next, on July 27, at the Lernerville Speedway is the Joe Pitkavish Memorial Modified Race which is part of the Mod Challenge. Next Friday’s Fab Four Racing is also Highland Tire Night. Four nights later on Tuesday July 31st is the first Bus and Kid’s Bike Race of the 2007 season. The “Summer Vacation” race kicks off at 7:00 p.m.
