Event sponsors Stoll Loaders and Bully Hill Vineyards looked on as Black Rock Street Stock competitor Rich Sharpsteen I proved last year’s win in the Woodhull Street Stock open was no accident as he drove all the way from his 12th starting spot to pick up the win in the first leg of the Woodhull/Black Rock challenge. Fellow Black Rock driver Frank Chapman wouldn’t let it come easy, as the two veteran drivers ran nose to tail for most of the remaining laps. Despite numerous challenges, Chapman would have to settle for second and Tony Foth was the first Morgan’s Auto Repair Woodhull regular, in third. Josh Nobriga came home fourth, followed by Dan Gordon in fifth. Darwin Davis put on a fine run, coming from 20th starting spot to earn 6th, followed by Rod Mullen, Mike Williams, Cliff Moss and Henry Miracle rounding out the top ten. Heat wins went to Buck Payne, Brian Knowles and Tony Foth. The second leg of the challenge is set for next Friday night at Black Rock Speedway, as Sharpsteen will be the man to beat for the challenge’s point money.
In the LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modifieds, the VanPelt brothers made it another Ted White Racing one-two sweep, as Billy VanPelt shot from his 5th place starting spot and into the lead on lap two. By lap seven, brother Curt moved into 2nd and the two went on to stage their own battle for the next 18 laps, while continually pulling away from the pack. The last three laps put the brothers in heavy lap traffic, but they both maneuvered their way through unscathed and Billy held on for his 6th victory of the season. Curt VanPelt did finish 2nd, followed by another strong run from Roger Williams in third. Frank Dunning would best Stacy Jackson for fourth, followed by Kevin Chilson in sixth. Dave DuBois had a solid run in 7th, followed by Steve Hartman Sr., Ray Bliss Jr. and Aaron Jacobus. Heat wins went to Brian Terwilliger, Steve Hartman Jr. and Dale Welty.
The S&W Awards Crate Sportsman class continues to increase their car count, as 18 cars took the green flag with Bill Shea leading the way to the green. Nate Delong quickly snagged the lead away on lap two, as Bill Brewer and Joe Dgien battled hard for second. On lap 10, Kenny Peoples Jr. and Dave Yehl joined the mix, making it a five car pack battling for the lead. Bill Brewer took advantage of an open low line going in to turn three on lap 13 and pulled off the slide job on Delong. Brewer would go from there to hold on for his second victory of 2007 followed by Delong who stayed strong for 2nd place. Peoples Jr. would nab third, trailed by Larry Keegan and Dave Yehl. The next group of five was led by Tony Hooker, with Dgien sliding to seventh. Gary Lampman brought home 8th, with Wesley Campbell and Cale Paul rounding out the top ten. Heat wins went to Brewer and Yehl.
18 NAPA Super Stocks checked in and Bryce Davis came away with his second feature win of the season. However, it was no easy task for the young high school student, as defending track champion Glenn Whritenour came all the way from his 13th starting spot to apply the pressure. Try as he may, Whritenour could do no better than 2nd, with current high point man Wayne Robertson finishing a strong third. Kenny Peoples Sr. made an impressive drive to fourth after starting dead last. Gary Archer rounded out the top five, followed by Bob Lubberts and Greg Young. Jessica Pierce bounced back after a few weeks of bad luck to bring home 8th, with Bob Clark and Mick Seeley rounding out the top ten. Heat wins went to Robertson and Whritenour.
Brian Grant Sr. picked up what had to have been the most bizarre of his five feature wins this season in the Signs Plus Mini Stock division. With Grant leading, the mighty four bangers were battling on lap nine when a community wide power surge shut down all of the lighting at the speedway. All of the drivers did an outstanding job to get their machines slowed down to a stop, with no major contact being made in the pitch dark. After power had been restored and racing action resumed, Ted Morseman Jr. got turned around in the middle of the backstretch and went into a series of violent rolls off the backstretch embankment. Fortunately, Morseman was able to walk away from his twisted machine unharmed. Despite all of the odd occurrences while leading, Grant could not be caught as Brian Butler settled for 2nd, followed by last week’s feature winner, Mike Smith. Brett Marlatt claimed fourth, with Art Goodier in tow for fifth. Adam Austin, Rich Sharpsteen III, Jason Ketrow, Eddie Mills and Rick McDaniels rounded out the top ten. Heat races were won by Art Goodier, Brett Marlatt and Mike Smith.
The LaBarron Brothers’ FWD class continues to provide some of the most exciting racing as they again ran their entire 20 lap feature with only one caution. Kevin Patton got the jump on fellow front row starter Mark Guinup to take the lead on lap one. It looked as Patton may drive away from the field, but by lap eleven Jamie Freeman had moved his way into 2nd and began challenging Patton for the lead. The two drivers put on an outstanding show, battling both each other and heavy lap traffic for the top spot. Not to be denied, Patton hung on for his third win of the season, with Freeman only a fender behind. Ron Daily Jr. capped a strong run for 3rd, followed by Gary Baker and JR Hoppe. Guinup led the next group of five, followed by Tom McGlynn, Kyle Moorehouse, Scott Cummings and Roger Moore. Nick Moorehouse, Isaac Byler and Kevin Patton all picked up heat race victories.
Pack up the kids and head to the high banks next week as E&B Recreational Sports and Southern Tier Coal present Christmas in July. A regular six division show will be accompanied by a huge bicycle give away. As of the latest count, no less than 70 bicycles will be given away as Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand to make it a night the youngsters will never forget!
