Berck Turns Tables on Boen, Wins in NCRA Late Models

Posted by Tom Ames  |  07/23/07

DONIPHAN, Neb. (July 20, 2007) – Exacting a little payback from Friday night, Kyle Berck used a caution flag to take the lead from Kelly Boen midway through the 50-lap feature and win in the O’Reilly NCRA Late Model Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.

Boen took the lead on lap seven and pulled away from the field by more than a straightaway on lap 25. Then six laps later, the first caution of the night came out.

On NCRA late model restarts, the leader is single file while everyone else lines up two-abreast. That put John Anderson, running second, on the inside of the first two-wide row with third-place Berck to his outside on the restart lineup.

As Boen led them to the green, Berck used the high line to shoot around the leader and move into the point. Boen slid up into second with Anderson still down low in third.

Berck encountered lapped traffic on lap 38, which was his downfall Friday as Boen used the slower cars to take the lead on the last lap. But tonight, Berck was able to smoothly weave his way through the traffic and maintain the lead. However, the slower cars held up Boen enough that Anderson moved into second place on lap 39.

A caution on the final circuit set up a two-lap dash for the cash. Berck led them to the green with Anderson again in second and on the inside in the first two-abreast row while Boen was on the outside.

Remembering how he took the lead on an earlier restart, Berck had to pick his poison as to which line he should protect. He stayed high, trying to block Boen on the outside. But down low, Anderson stuck his nose to the inside of Berck going into the first two turns. Berck regrouped, kept the lead, and took the checker and its $4,000 purse.

On the final lap, Boen dropped low and powered by Anderson down the back straight to finish in second with Anderson third. Joe Kosiski was fourth and Mike Wiarda fifth.

Co-sanctioned by the CLMA, 46 drivers signed in for the second night of the Pump 'N' Pantry's Late Model Nationals at Mid-Nebraska Speedway.
