Billy Decker wins the Awkesasne Mohawk Casino 100
By Martin Bélanger
CORNWALL, On – Sunday July 22, 2007 – It was the presentation of the Awkesasne Mohawk Casino 100 on this beautiful Sunday night. Nearly 40 modifieds had signed in for this annual Big Block Show for the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series. Another capacity crowd was on hand for this great event.
Oustide pole runner Alain Boisvert took the lead in the hundred-lap event until lap 4 when Clément Therrien took it from Boisvert with an outside move until pole-sitter Pat O’Brien grabbed from Therrien on lap #6 in front of the grandstand. O’brien led for the next 9 laps until lap 15 when Brett Hearn caught him in turn 1 and 2. The leaders caught some traffic and O’Brien took the lead back on Hearn between lap cars. A yellow slowed the field on lap 29, as it was the first caution of the race, those laps were done in only 7 minutes. On the restart, O’Brien keeps the lead and dominates the field and does some great moves in traffic and had almost a half-track lead over Hearn while the race had gone for 41 laps without a yellow. O’Brien got caught up in a tangle on lap 70 with a few cars in turn 3. It is the second time that O’Brien gets into that kind of situation during the big block event at Cornwall. The top 5 on lap 70 was Hearn, Paine, Therrien, Decker and Danny Johnson who came from 21st spot. Hearn gets the top spot on the restart on lap 81 followed by Steve Paine. Hearn take a good lead over Paine but Decker was coming strong and took the lead over Hearn on lap 98 after a great battle with the corporate jet. Decker was able to hold off Hearn to win the race. Paine finished third; Danny Johnson was fourth while Therrien completed the top 5. Decker gets the guaranteed spot for the Rite-Aid 200 at Syracuse in October. Billy Decker, Alain Boisvert, Gary Tomkins, Steve Paine won the qualifying heats while Danny Johnson and Tim Fuller were the winners in the consolation race. It took only over 31 minutes to do this feature event.
Eighteen cars took Scott Hanton’s green flag while Ricky Thompson took the lead and pulls away from the field until a yellow came on lap 11. On the restart, Thompson keeps his spot but has some good charges from Dave Bissonnette for the lead. Thompson was able hold off Bissonnette on the last laps to win his second feature of the year, Bissonnette finished second, Stéphane Lebrun, Clayton Benedict fourth and Louie Jackson rounded out the top 5. Ricky Thompson had a perfect night as he won the first heat race, Stéphane Lebrun and Clayton Benedict won the other heats.
George McPhee takes the lead over the 23-car field, until a caution came on the first lap for two cars that had stopped on the speedway. Second place runner Marc Lalonde stole the lead from McPhee on the restart and led for the next 3 laps when a tangle between two cars outside of turn 2 slows the field. Bruno Richard does the same thing to Lalonde on the restart when another caution came for Bruno Boivin on lap 7. Richard keeps the lead over Lalonde on the issuing green. Another caution came on lap 12 but Richard got a good lead on the green to win his first win of the season. Marc Lalonde was second, followed by Kurtis McPhee, Nathan Delormier and Derek Cryderman completed the top 5. Steve Herrigan, Kurtis McPhee and Derek Cryderman won the heat races.
Stéphane Depatie took the lead in the rookie expert feature and led the first two laps until Mark Usereau passed him on the backstretch and a caution came on lap 7 for Depatie. Usereau kept the lead on the restart and another yellow came on lap 8 for Corey Wheeler who lost a tire. Usereau was again the leader on the issuing green but he lost a tire on lap 10 to give the lead to Gage Morin. Morin got a good jump on the restart and was able to lead the last two laps to win his second feature of the year over Mike Gaucher and Matt Leroux who completed the top 3. Mark Usereau and Corey Wheeler won the heat races.
In the rookie novice feature, Andrew Russell took the first spot for the first eleven laps when a hard charging Bob Ray took it from Russell on the last lap and win the the feature. Russell finished second while Jean-Marc Larose rounded up the top 3. Ray had a perfect night as he won the first heat while Stéphane Racine won the second.
Another great night of racing, with the big guns in town for the Advance Auto Parts Big Block event. A great turnout in cars with nearly 110 cars answered the call for tonights race program. Another big show next week with the presentation of the 100 lap distance event of the Lucas Oil Canadian DIRT Series. An excellent field of modifieds is expected for next weeks show. Drivers like David Hébert, Pierre Dagenais, Danny O’Brien and other will be here to do the battle against the Cornwall regulars. Time Trials are scheduled to start at 6pm while the first heat race will start at 7pm.
