Sprinters Bounce Back with Two More NCRA Race Days
PARK CITY, Kan. (July 24, 2007) – It will be a quick turnaround for the O’Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol. After a two-day show last weekend in the 51st Annual Hutchinson Grand Nationals, they have two more days of action this week.
Thursday they make their yearly trip to the famed Belleville (Kan.) High Banks the night before the midget nationals. Friday they’ll travel about 150 miles south on Highway 81 to visit 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan.
J.D. Johnson took the checker when the sprinters raced at Belleville last year as Garry Lee Maier finished second and Toby Chapman third. Maier, the two-time defending series champion, won there in 2005.
Last year, Maier won the series’ only visit to 81 Speedway with Tony Bruce Jr. second and Mike Peters third. In 2005, Maier finished third and 14th in two shows there.
Jon Freeman surprised everyone by grabbing his first-ever NCRA checker at Hutch. As a result, the Salina, Kan., driver moved from ninth to seventh in the standings.
Current point leader Maier, of Cimarron, Kan., stayed on top with a seventh-place finish while his nearest competitor, Don Droud Jr., was ninth.
Mike Peters was fourth and remained third in points. A sixth-place finish helped Mike Chadd jump from sixth to a fourth-place tie with Stu Snyder. Just five points behind them is J.D. Johnson, second in points last year.
