Once again, the track apologizes for Saturday and looks forward to seeing the fans in the future.
The Outlaws Late Model Series' previous three visits to Sharon Speedway produced three-wide, wheel-to-wheel racing, providing a stellar display of driving talent for the fans. 2006 Review:
Eckert Dominates Buckeye 50 at Sharon Speedway
July 8, 2006; HARTFORD, Ohio - Rick Eckert held off a late charge by Chub Frank, and took the checkered flag to win the World of Outlaws Late Model Series "Buckeye 50" presented by Tom's Sewer & Drain Service on the 3/8-mile oval at Sharon Speedway.
The beautiful evening began with "The Million Dollar Man" Donnie Moran lapped the oval in 15.842 seconds during qualifying. Eckert was second, Frank third, Robbie Blair fourth and Darrell Lanigan fifth.
Moran went on to win the first 10-lap heat race of the evening. Eckert, a seven-time winner in 2006, had the car to beat in the second heat race of the night. Josh Richards steered the #1 Rocket Chassis machine to victory in third heat, and Dave Scott won the fourth and final late model heat of the night.
Following the heat races, John Blankenship, Clint Smith and Dutch Davies raced their way into the feature by finishing first through third in the first B-Main. In the second B-Main, Chad Ruhlman, Mike Balzano and Chris Hackett all transferred to the 50-lap A-Main. Dave Scott took the checkered flag in the 4-lap dash to earn the pole for the "Buckeye 50."
Dave Scott, for the first time in his career, and Eckert paced the field to the green flag for the "Buckeye 50." Moran's good evening ended after only one lap into the feature. He pulled off the oval with an engine problem. Eckert led at the drop of the green, with Scott in second. Eckert streaked away from the field after one lap was in the books. Lanigan was on the move early, as he took second spot away from Scott. This battle was behind the #24 machine driven by Eckert. Eckert built a ½-second lead over Lanigan after five circuits around the oval. Lanigan and Eckert drove away from the field to make it a two-car runaway in the preliminary stages of the "Buckeye 50."
After 10 laps, Josh Richards, who started fourth, reeled in Lanigan in the battle for the second position behind Eckert. "Kid Rocket" used a lapped machine to his advantage in turn two in his battle with Lanigan. Richards dipped low and pinned Lanigan behind a lapped car to take second spot. Eckert's car was on rails through traffic as he built nearly a ½ straightaway advantage over Richards. The caution flag flew on lap 23 as Steve Francis slowed with a problem.
On the restart, Eckert maintained his edge over Richards, who drove a backup car with only a total of four laps on a racetrack in well over one year. Richards looked low in turn one on lap number 26. Eckert held off the charge, as he stuck his machine on the cushion in turn two. As Eckert and Richards battled side-by-side for the lead, Chub Frank moved into third.
With 20 laps remaining in the "Buckeye 50" Eckert held a five car-length lead over Richards and Frank. The top three cars remained locked down in the battle for the top spot until a lap 47 yellow for Shane Clanton bunched up the field. Frank used the restart to jet around Richards on the cushion in turn two. Frank set sail after Eckert on the white flag lap, but Eckert wheeled his machine to the flag ahead of Frank. He took the checkered flag for the eighth time in 2006 on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series tour. Frank wound up in second, with Richards in third. Lanigan came home in fourth spot, and Robbie Blair was fifth. Dale McDowell, Davey Johnson, Todd Andrews, Dave Hess and Chad Ruhlman rounded out the top 10 finishers. Eckert led all 50 laps in the "Buckeye 50."
