Nuss and Bowen Earn First Victory at Limaland
The first Ladies Thunderstock event of the year was cancelled because of foul weather. As hot laps began on Friday, the threat of rain loomed over Limaland Motorsports Park's attempt at the second Ladies race of the year. Team Limaland, determined to run the full slate of races, provided a lightning fast track and show which had their faithful fans racing appetite satisfied by 10:15 p.m.
Barney Craig shot to the front of the pack in the Bud Thunderstock feature race and looked to have a stranglehold on his first victory of the year. Tim Bowen spent the first 14 laps trying to work his way under Craig with little success. Plus, Bowen had to contend with Jeff Babcock who was attempting to find a way under him and Craig. On the last lap, as the three front runners barreled into turn three, Craig pushed up the track. Bowen dove low, and Babcock stuck his nose right in the middle. Streaking out of turn four, it was three-wide at the line with Bowen snatching his first victory, Babcock settling for second, and Craig left wondering what happened in third.
Mike Brecht was on a mission Friday night. He dominated his Elwer Fence Sprints heat race and smoked the field after gaining control of the lead from Dwain Leiber five laps into the 25-lap feature. His full straightaway lead at the finish was the exclamation mark on a flawless evening. Seems like a typical Mike Brecht night, right? Not the case at all. Brecht was driving a team car out of the Joe Seeling stable.
During his post race interview, Brecht, showing true class, explained, "My car has a 410 in it and is at I-96 for an Outlaw show. Evidently, I wasn't getting the job done. But you know the Seeling's are great people and were nice enough to put me in this car. They have great equipment. I want to thank them for this opportunity." Second-place finisher and long-time rival, Tim Allison, commented on the situation, "I understand what Mike is going through. I've been out of a ride myself. He drove a great race and deserved to win."
On a side note, Mike Dussel suffered mechanical woes early in the feature and saw his healthy point lead take a big hit as championship challenger, Phil Gressman, finished in 5th place.
The Professional Computer Company Modifieds hit the track for their feature with Darryl Banks on the pole. Banks has had the most dominant car this year in terms of victories. Terry Hull has been the most consistent and Hull was riding the momentum wave from last week's win. Banks took the lead early as Hull and Frankie Luchini tried to work their way around Andy Bibler. On a mid-race restart, Luchini went to the top and rocketed by Hull and Banks. Once in the lead, Luchini went to the low-side to deny Banks his preferred line. Hull, on the other hand, learned from Luchini's restart and took his car to the cushion. Banks dropped out with mechanical problems and Hull worked the high groove to perfection and propelled himself to his second win in a row.
Last up was the Ladies Thunderstock event. Nine ladies strapped on the helmet and took to the famed high-banks of Limaland Motorsports Park. Christian Whipple appeared to have the race sewn up until contact with Kelli Babcock eliminated both cars. Jessica Nuss showed a lot of speed and finesse and she took th checkered flag handily over Bridgit Brunk.
Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park welcomes the Dirt Trucks for their annual appearance at the famed bullring. They will be doing battle along with the Professional Computer Company Modifieds and Bud Thunderstocks on Ohio's Quarter-Mile of Thunder. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m. Visit www.limaland.com for complete details.
