HESSTON, PA – Second-generation driver Bill Jones Jr. of Irvona picked up his first ever feature win on Saturday night at Hesston Speedway in the PA 305 Sprints during the Jamie Peterson and Mark Goshorn Memorial Race sponsored by Goshorn’s Racing Supplies.
Repeat winners included Mike Shoemaker of Hesston in the limited late models, Cris Edwards Jr., of Hesston in the street stocks and Joe Hammers in the hobby stocks.
The limited late models took to the track with Brad Kling and Mike Duck leading the field to the start with Kling taking the lead and setting the pace. Mike Altobelli Jr. worked his way to second from seventh by the fourth lap and was looking for a way around Kling.
Just as Altobelli took the lead on lap six, the first caution waved for a crash in turn two. On the restart it was still Altobelli in the lead with third place starter Mike Shoemaker hot on his trail. Shoemaker followed Altobelli for six laps before making his move. Using the outside like he did most of the night, Shoemaker went past Altobelli in the third and fourth turns and took the lead just as another crash was taking place. This time Derek Byler and Justin Kann crashed hard on the back stretch, with Kann being checked over by the ambulance crew. He later went to be checked over by private vehicle at the hospital.
When the race resumed it was all Shoemaker with Altobelli in second and Tim Smith Jr. in third. The top three ran away from the field, but waged their own battle the rest of the race, with Shoemaker taking the win over Altobelli, Smith, Kling and Matt Parks. Heat wins went to Donnie Hedge, Brian Lessley and George Dixon Jr.
Mel Light and Jim “Cowboy” Kennedy led the PA 305 Sprints to the start and it was Kennedy who took the lead. He led the opening two laps, before Light worked past him for the lead off the fourth turn. Light was setting the pace, as young Billy Jones was coming to the front from his sixth place starting spot.
On lap eight Jones moved past Kennedy for second and started to reel in the leader. Working through the third and fourth turns the 16-year-old driver took the lead with an outside pass and began to pull away. A caution with three laps to go tightened the field and put Craig Robinson on Jones’ bumper. Jones was able to hold off Robinson for his first ever feature win. Robinson, Light, Kennedy and Rod Peters completed the top five. Heat wins were divided between Andy Haus, Joe Zap and Billy Jones Jr.
Ken Singer and Scott White led the street stocks to the start with White taking the lead. Cris Edwards Jr. moved to second and immediately started to hound White for the lead. Edwards looked high and low several times, every lap, but it wasn’t until the eighth lap he could make his move. Once he had the lead, he was home free and held off Whites challenges. The top five were: Edwards, White, Khi Swanger, Tom Williams and Singer. Heat wins went to Cris Edwards Jr. and Tom Williams.
Ryan Sager and Jake Gongloff led the hobby stock feature down for Gary Deem’s green flag with Gongloff taking the lead. Lou Wannayn sat second until Joe Hammers moved into the runner up position.
As the race continued it was a battle to the end as Hammers hounded Gongloff until lap 12, when he assumed the lead. Curtis Guyer moved into second and brough Joe Dearmitt to third, dropping Gongloff to fourth, but the battle continued with Hammers winning by only about a car length over Guyer, Dearmitt, Gongloff and Gary Morder. Heat wins went to Curtis Heath, Joe Dearmitt and Russell Lightner.
