With Santa and Mrs. Claus looking on, high school students Nate Delong and Zack Sutton earned their first ever feature wins at Woodhull Raceway on E&B Recreational Sports and Southern Tier Coal night. While Billy VanPelt, Brady Wonderling, Mike Smith and JR Hoppe also unwrapped Christmas in July feature wins, the big winners were the 70 children who all went home with brand new bicycles.
A full field of 24 cars took the green in the LJ Kennedy Trucking 358 Modifieds with Dale Welty jumping from his 2nd starting position to take the early lead. Last week’s feature winner, Billy VanPelt, bolted from his 13th starting spot and was challenging Welty for the lead by lap five. For the next seven laps, Welty tried to make his #9X as wide as possible, but VanPelt’s charge was not to be denied. As Billy took command of the lead, brother Curt was busy making his way back through heavy traffic after having gone to the rear as a part of a major pile-up on lap three. Curt appeared to have the fastest car on the track, making it all the way back to 2nd , but ran out of time as brother Billy racked up his 7th feature win of the season. Bryan Terwilliger capped off another strong run by taking home 3rd, followed by Steve Hartman Sr. and Frank Dunning.
If the way he’s been running the last few weeks was any indication, it is no big surprise that teenager Nate Delong picked up his first ever feature win in the S&W Awards Crate Sportsman class Saturday night. Delong grabbed the lead away from pole sitter Cale Paul on lap two to take command. Late in the race, he would have to hold back some major challenges from veterans Larry Keegan and Bill Brewer. The three drivers put on an outstanding show and had the crowd on their feet as they exited turn four three-wide on the final lap. Keegan would barely edge out Brewer for 2nd, with Loren Lincoln making a solid showing for fourth and Kenny Peoples Jr. rounding out the top five.
Twenty-four NAPA Super Stocks took to the track and proceeded to develop a bad case of yellow fever. Current high point man Wayne Robertson used a high-side move to take the lead away from Rich Marlatt on lap three. Robertson looked to be capable of checking out on the field, but nine cautions would keep the pace slowed and the hound dogs on his tail. Brady Wonderling used the cautions to his advantage, methodically moving his way forward from his 12th starting spot to 2nd place by lap thirteen. Another yellow flag restart provided Wonderling the opportunity he was looking for, as he wrestled the lead away from Robertson and sailed to his first win of the season at Woodhull. Jeremy Wonderling made it as far as Robertson’s back bumper to finish 3rd, followed by Glenn Whritenour and Rich Marlatt.
Addison High School student Zack Sutton probably said “Thank you, Santa” as he pulled position number two to start the Morgan’s Auto Repair Street Stock feature. Sutton used the front row spot to take off and never look back, as he earned his first career feature win on the high banks. While Sutton was setting sail, a fierce battle waged behind him among Rod Mullen, Brian Knowles, Danny Gordon, Darwin Davis and Buck Payne. Knowles would eventually have to pit with a flat tire as Mullen went on to finish a strong second. Darwin Davis had his best run in a quite a while, putting his Ford machine across the line in 3rd, with Buck Payne taking fourth. Mike Williams made a late race charge to finish fifth.
Canisteo’s Mike Smith continues to prove that he is a force to be reckoned with in the Signs Plus Mini Stock division. Smith drew the pole position for the main event and took it flag-to-flag for his second feature win of the season. Point leader Art Goodier could get to Smith’s bumper, but couldn’t pull off the winning pass and had to settle for the runner-up position. The top five was rounded out by some more heavy-hitters as Brian Grant Sr. continued his string of strong runs to finish 3rd, followed by veteran Eddie Mills in fourth. Young gun Brett Marlatt edged Rexville’s Justin McNeil for fifth.
The LaBarron Brothers FWD class had the remedy for the evening’s outbreak of yellow fever by applying heavy doses of great racing and avoiding outbreaks of contagious crashing. Multiple feature winners JR Hoppe and Jamie Freeman battled hot and heavy for the lead as a hornet’s nest of competitors swarmed behind them. Hoppe proved up to the task, picking up his 4th feature win of 2007, followed by Freeman and the Volkswagen of Gary Baker. Nick Moorehouse had a fine run for fourth with Ron Daily Jr. picking up 5th. The 12 lap B-Main was won by Kevin Patton and Ron Hill made a late race pass on Mark Guinup to win the six lap Moe’s Karting World dash for cash.
The Central New York Mini Sprints will be guests at the high banks next week as Multi Media Services join the Elmira Jackals as event sponsors. Come meet the Jackals’ mascot, “Blade” and enjoy seven divisions of exciting racing at Woodhull!
