NORTH EAST, PA/CHERRY HILL, NJ JULY 29, 2007 . . . “We had a top five car,” said Tom Hessert. “We were just cruising in eighth or ninth place waiting to make our move when we got caught up in a huge accident.”
The lap 203 accident put Hessert and his MAACO Americas Body Shop Chevrolet Monte Carlo out of Saturday’s BFGoodrich Tires 250 presented by Longhorn at Lake Erie, PA Speedway. He was credited with a 20th place finish.
“It was really a great confidence builder for all of us,” said the rookie Hooters Cup driver. “Qualifying fourth quickest and getting a great starting spot really made us feel good about our chances in the race. We were running with the leaders.
“It was our best qualifying effort since joining the USAR Hooters ProCup circuit and it made us optimistic that we could do very well in the race. It is a shame that we came along at the wrong time when a wild accident was happening and we got caught up in it ending a great run.”
Hessert said that having NASCAR/ARCA racer Andy Belmont spotting for him was a big plus.
SPEED will show the BFGoodrich Tires 250 at 4 p.m. (ET) on August 8 and again August 10th at 12 noon.
The next stop for Hessert and the MAACO Americas Body Shop Monte Carlo is Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday, August 4th.
“There was heavy damage on the race car Saturday night. The crew will have their hands full but we are positive we will have it ready for this weekend’s race at Hickory, NC,” said the Cherry Hill, NJ college student. “After the strong effort at Lake Erie Speedway we are optimistic about the next race.”
