Nothing Can Contain Pitcher In CCFS Sportsman, Devendorf Tops Mod Lites

Sunday was A-Verdi Storage Containers night at Cayuga County Fair Speedway, but nothing could contain Jeremy Pitcher from picking up his third DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature win of the season. “We try to set up the car to run high between turns three and four,” stated Pitcher. “That’s the fast way of going into the third turn. The momentum helps increase your chances of winning.”

The ESDCA Mod Lites were on hand with 26 cars taking the green in their 20-lap feature run. It was be pole-sitter Tim Devendorf who would lead every lap on his way to victory. “This track was perfect,” commented Devendorf, “I didn’t even spin a wheel once.’

The UMP/DIRTcar Street Stocks were also on hand with the feature win going to Phil Marsden. Marsden was sent to the rear of the field for causing two aborted restarts, yet then charged back up though the pack to regain the lead on lap seven of 12. “I was just lucky,” related Marsden. “We ran real good here tonight, but I just wish we had a few more cars”, referring to the eight cars at the track.

Jeff VanDusen took advantage of the opportunities given to him and made his own way through lapped cars to capture his first career ASCS Patriot A-Main win in the 25-lap sprint car special. Point leader Chuck Hebing pulled out to an early advantage, quickly hitting lap traffic on lap five. As “Cobra” went to move around the slower traffic, he missed his mark entering turn one, causing him to slide up and hit the outside wall, resulting in a flat tire. That would be all the luck VanDusen would need to stay out in front.

VanDusen became the fourth different first-time ASCS winner of 2007, joining Jared Zimbardi, Jessica Zemken and Jason Barney. Rick Wilson scored his best run of the season with a runner-up finish, 15-car lengths off the leader at the finish, but almost a half-track ahead of third-place runner Jared Zimbardi. Scott Kreutter scored his second-straight fourth place finish while Blake Breen rounded out the top-five. Jason Barney crossed the line sixth, solidifying his position atop the A-Verdi King of Central New York Standings on a race night sponsored by A-Verdi.

Don Harvey Jr. captured the A-Verdi Storage Containers Central New York Mini Sprint feature for the third straight race at Cayuga County, but this time around it was not as easy. Harvey was in third with just two laps remaining when a caution slowed the field for a two-lap sprint to the finish that ultimately changed the entire complexion of the 20-lap feature. Coming to the white flag, a puff of smoke came out of the No. 99 of leader Mike Kiser, and by the time he hit the front stretch he was slowing right in front of a field breathing down his neck. Before he could get out of harm’s way, runner-up Jimmy Broderick had spun and Harvey was into the race lead.

Rick Hench was the early race leader but his car faded in the late stages. Even though he fell back as far as fourth he was able to cross in second ahead of Shaun Gosselin, who scored his second-straight top-three finish with CNYMS. Broderick was able to make up some ground after his spin, charging back up to finish fourth while heat race winner Jamie Kiser rounded out the top-five.

Finally, it was victory number four for points leader Bill Werner in the BattleKarz division. Karl Werner and Adam Keuer rounded out the top-three paying positions.

The 25-lap DIRTcar Sportsman main began with John Juhl II taking the lead with Todd Town in tow. The first yellow flew on lap two when newcomer Jeff Stevenson spun in the first turn. He elected to take his car pitside and the race resumed.

Juhl was able to stretch out a lead over Alan Fink, who was now in second and being challenged by Shaw Donath. Donath got around Fink and then set his sights on Juhl. On lap 15 Donath made his move and took the lead and three laps later Juhl slowed dramatically exiting the fourth turn with a flat right rear. Compounding this situation was Anthony Steiner and Tim Currier coming together, sending both cars spinning into the first turn infield. The yellow was out for a second time in the race.

Pitcher took second following a battle with both Jeff Isabell Jr. and Fink. Pitcher then was able to pass Donath for the lead with just five laps remaining in the race. At the finish it would be Pitcher followed by Donath, Isabell Jr., Fink and Mike Mahaney.

Pole-sitter Tim Devendorf quickly took command of the lead in the 20-lap Mod Lite finale followed by Jeff Barker and Joe Gwilt. On lap four the yellow flew for an accident involving Mike Rainville, who pitted for repairs. Apparently these repairs did not work as Rainville lost a wheel in the fourth turn and the yellow was out again on lap five.

Devendorf, Barker and Rocco Leone were all able to space themselves out in the first three positions for the next six circuits of green flag racing. On lap 12 the yellow came out when Jamie King looped around in the fourth turn. Two laps later the yellow flew again when Jeff Williams and Rich Rainville came together, spinning out in the fourth turn. The final six laps were run under green with Devendorf easily taking the feature win over Barker, Leone, Ken Gamlen and Barry Virts.

The 12-lap Street Stock race was full of drama. Nick Rizzo took the lead at the drop of the green, but then started to fall back through the field. Darl Ellis Sr. took over as the leader of the race. On lap five the yellow flew when Mike Dandino had a tire go flat and he made contact with the third turn wall.

The restart became controversial. Phil Marsden, running second to Ellis Sr., fired first twice. On the third try starter Dave Farney put Marsden to the rear, moving Steve Woodworth into second. Due to the small size of the restart field, Marsden was back challenging for the lead in just two laps and quickly took the top spot and shot away all by himself. As the checkers fell it was Marsden followed by Woodworth. James Wallace finished third nearly a full straight away back of Woodworth while Ellis and Rizzo rounded out the top-five.

CAYUGA CHATTER: Steve Gray returned behind the wheel of a Sportsman car. Gray took the wheel of Daryl Barrett’s number 1 attempting to dial in the car …Well over 100 race cars were present for the racing action that featured six separate classes…Earlier in the day a special benefit was held for Don Macvicz at nearby Devaney’s Grill on Route 34 in Weedsport., featuring live entertainment. Donnie Mack was seriously injured in a race car accident on Sunday, June 10th at the speedway.
