As we enter the “Dog Days” of summer, the 2007 Lernerville Speedway season is nearing an end. There are four more weeks of Fab Four Racing, with Budweiser Points ending on August 24. There are also a handful of special events still scheduled before the 2007 comes to a close.
With just four weeks of Fab Four Racing remaining, the Budweiser Points Fund is also nearing an end. In the Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprints, the Championship is being heavily contested between four-time champion Ed Lynch Jr., reigning track champion Kevin Schaeffer, and two-time champion Rod George. Alex Ferree has all but locked up his first Lernerville Track Championship in the Friedman’s Freshmarkets Late Model, with only Gary Lyle having any chance to catch him. Brian Swartzlander and Del Rougeux Jr. are the front-runners to win the Ferrante Motors Cars Modified Track Championship, but Dave Murdick’s consistency has him still in the hunt. As is the case most Friday Night’s, the chase for the championship in the Advance Auto Parts Pure Stocks is wide open. Mike Pegher Jr. remains atop the Budweiser Points standings, but back-to-back reigning track champion Butch Lambert has been on fire in July, and is hungry for his third consecutive championship, which would be his fourth overall. Bob Egley, Greg Beach, Jason Fosnaught, Bob Lipinski, Paul Schreckengost and Joe Kelley are all within striking distance of Pegher’s lead.
In addition to Fab Four Racing, fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from over 100 different drivers the next three weeks. Every year, one of the most popular nights of the season is Nostalgia Night, coordinated by Carol Gamble. This year’s first attempt at Nostalgia Night was rained out on July 13, and is rescheduled for August 10. Nostalgia Night welcomes back former drivers of days gone by. For the more tenured fans, Nostalgia Night is an opportunity to relive the past and meet their favorite drivers from different generations. For younger fans it’s a learning opportunity and the chance to meet some of the drivers whose names they’ve heard of and perhaps seen pictures of, but never got to see race or meet in person. For the drivers it’s an annual reunion with friends and fans at the track that made them famous and vice versa! Don Gamble and Walt Wimer will interview some of the drivers prior to race time.
Drivers scheduled to appear: Bob Axe, Johnny Axe, Dick Bailey, Banker Beach, John Beaber, Buddy Cochran, Harley Chuba, Fran Gower, Harry Hein, Doc Harmon, Dave Hoffman, George Leon, Gus Linder, Don Luffy, Andy Lutz, Ed Lynch Sr., Jim Magill, Hoot Martin, Jerry Matus, Clayton Majors, Dave Meloy, Brian Muehlman, Mark Muehlman, Dunk Packdozi, Dave Pegher, Don Pegher, Barry Peters, Ralph Quarterson, Terry Rosenberger, Dave Rupp, Deek Scott, Herb Scott, Smokey Schempp, Gus Sholich, Ron & Barb Smith, Jack Sodeman, Bob Stanford, Dick Swartzlander, Blackie Watt, Bob Wearing Sr., Bill Wheeling.
There will also be at least three classic/vintage race cars on display: Paul Backus with Deek Scott’s Modified #7A, Mike Cotter with Bob Kennedy’s Late Model #9, and Darwin Stivenson, 36 Chevy Coupe #0.
Before Nostalgia Night though, fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from some of their favorite drivers of today. This Friday, August 3 drivers from the Friedman’s Freshmarkets Late Models and Ferrante Motor Cars Modifieds will be signing autographs from @ 5:45-6:30. Then in two weeks, on August 17, drivers from the Commercial Truck & Trailer Sprint Cars and Advance Auto Parts Pure Stocks will take their shift at the autograph table. It’s just a small way for Lernerville and especially the drivers to give back and say “Thanks!” to the fans, young and old!
The next Marquee show on the 2007 schedule is #1 Cochran Stars of NASCAR Night on Thursday August 16 featuring NASCAR superstars Tony Stewart and Kenny Schrader. Both Stewart and Schrader will be racing their own dirt late models against local and regional late model drivers, all vying for a $3000 payday. Advance purchase tickets are on sale now and fans will be eligible to meet Stewart and Schrader during the event.
Then on August 31, the All Star Circuit of Champion Sprints will be in town to battle local drivers in the Sonia Bullis Memorial. The All Star Sprints will share the bill with the MACS Late Models and Pure Stocks for the final headlining event of the season.
The School Bus, Powder Puff and Kid’s Bike Races will be back on the track Saturday September 8 for the G&D Beverage “Back to School” Races. The Senior Series will make their first and only appearance that night as well.
The racing action wraps up with a two-day show on Friday & Saturday September 14th & 15th. Advance Auto Parts Autumn-Motive Fest will feature Pure Stock Pandemonium, UMP Modifieds and the return of the 100 lap Enduros Friday night. Then on Saturday night, Pure Stock Pandemonium and UMP Modifieds return, along with Mod-Lites and a Demo Derby.
The 2007 Lernerville Speedway schedule will conclude with the 1st Annual Lernerville Automotive Swap Meet on Saturday September 22.
