Rougeux Wins Fifth in Modifieds, Felmlee Victorious for Seventh Time in Sprints at 12th Night of Racing at Sharon Speedway
Fraley edges Dellinger by .003 sec. in the E-Mod feature
HARTFORD, Ohio; August 4, 2007 - Bob Felmlee (Sprints), Del Rougeux (Modifieds), Howard Fraley (E-Mods), Stan Woomer (Stocks) and Jason Scoville (Limited Sprints) visited victory lane on Saturday in the Fantastic Five's 12th racing night of 2007 at Sharon Speedway.
First on the speedway was the Tom's Sewer and Drain Service Pure Stock 15-lap finale, with Stan Woomer scoring the victory. Dennis Lenny and Tim Burns were the front row starters for the feature. Lenny grabbed the early edge, but Dwayne Clay, who started fourth, darted to the lead before the field completed a lap. Woomer slotted into second, with Lenny relegated to third. The caution flag flew on the second lap when Tony Spaghetti slowed in Turn Two with a rear wheel problem, with Woomer in the top spot. Woomer moved to the lead just before a yellow came out. On the restart, Woomer built a slight edge over Clay as the cars worked the third lap. Steve D'Apolito was the man on the move in the preliminary stages of the race. After starting 12th, he found his way to second in just four laps. He closed on Woomer just as the caution flag flew, bunching up the field. D'Apolito showed his nose under Woomer's No. 2 machine on the fourth circuit, but Woomer held his ground. With six laps on the board, Woomer led D'Apolito, Clay and Larry Root. After a strong run, Clay spun into the infield after contact from a pair of cars on the eighth lap. Meanwhile, the two-car battle at the sharp end of the order remained close. Woomer appeared to have a slightly quicker car than D'Apolito as the race reached the halfway point, but D'Apolito stayed glued to his bumper. Woomer played great defense as D'Apolito attempted to find a way around the No. 2 car as the laps dwindled. After a lap 10 restart, Woomer once again stayed cool under D'Apolito's intense pressure, and looked to be on his way to the victory, but the caution flag flew once more with one lap to go. The last-lap shootout resulted in one more cool, calm and collected lap from Woomer, as he notched his first victory at Sharon Speedway this season. D'Apolito finished second, with Root third, Lenny fourth and Sonny Wisler was fifth. Clay, Jamie Duncan, Bill Hanna and Gary Robinson won the heat races.
Del Rougeux dominated the 25-lap Gibson-Governor Insurance Modified feature, notching his third straight win. Front row starters Rex King and Rex King, Jr. made it a father and son duo at the front of the field in the feature. Rex King got a great start to take the early lead. Brian Swartzlander also slotted into second on the start. Rex King's lead was short-lived as he looped his No. 65 machine on the second lap, which resulted in a chain reaction incident sending Dana Gearhart into the Turn Two wall. Rex King's misfortune moved Swartzlander to the top spot. Rougeux started in 12th position after winning the previous two features. He wasted little time charging to the front. Rougeux moved into third on the second circuit, and then found his way to second with a nifty three-wide maneuver on Rob Kristyak to take second two laps later. Rougeux did not stop there, as he lined Swartzlander up on the bottom of Turn Two on the fifth lap. The two cars drag raced down the backstretch, with Rougeux leading out of Turn Four. With 10 laps on the board, Rougeux held a small lead over Swartzlander, Kristyak, Jim Rasey and Rex King, Jr. He maintained a five car length edge over Swartzlander for much of the remaining 15 laps. Rougeux cruised on the bottom of the oval all the way to the checkered flag to pick up his fifth feature victory of the season. Swartzlander finished second, with Kristyak third, Rasey fourth and Ron Eperthener fifth. Rex King and Swartzlander won the heat races.
Bob Felmlee snagged the checkered flag for the seventh time this season in the Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint Car 25-lap feature. Danny Mumaw and Dan Shetler were on the front row in the finale. Mumaw took the early edge with Shetler slotting into second. Shetler lined up Mumaw on the second lap, and darted to the lead. Shetler quickly built a one straightaway advantage with seven laps on the board. Current point leader Felmlee started in 10th spot. He gradually picked off the traffic on his way to the front. He moved to fifth on lap five. Two laps later, Felmlee used the bottom of the oval to slide into fourth. Meanwhile, Shetler was cruising away from Kevin Schaeffer, who moved around Mumaw for second on the eighth lap. Felmlee used the first yellow flag of the night on lap 10 to his advantage. The Franklin, Pa. native moved to third on the 11th lap. With the race halfway over, Shetler led Schaeffer, Felmlee, Mumaw and Bob Lime. After lapping the first 13 laps on the bottom, Felmlee moved to the cushion to track down Schaeffer. He used the cushion to snag second away from Schaeffer on the 14th circuit. He reeled in Shetler, and attempted to take the lead on lap No. 18, but Shetler held on. One lap later, the move stuck, as Felmlee used the cushion in Turn Four to take the lead for good. Felmlee quickly built a substantial lead on his way to his seventh victory of the season. Shetler crossed the line in second, with Schaeffer third, Carl Baker fourth and Mumaw fifth. Shetler and Mumaw scored wins in the heat races.
In the Limited Sprint division's 15-lap feature, Jason Scoville picked up the victory after leading all 15 circuits. Scoville and John Boyer Jr. paced the field to the green flag at the start of the feature, with Scoville quickly building sizeable lead. Nate Stein found his way to second, with Jack Whitmore slotting into third. Guy Griffin moved to third on the seventh lap behind Scoville and Stein. Despite a series of yellow flags, Scoville was strong on restarts. Stein pressured Scoville each time the green flag came out, but Scoville was able to get the power down and build a bit of breathing space. The slight gap was all Scoville needed, as he was able to pull away and score his second career victory. Stein finished second. The best battle on the track involved Griffin and 12th-place starter Brandon Spithaler. Spithaler used a late overtaking maneuver on Griffin to snag third. Griffin crossed the finish line fourth, with Whitmore rounding out the top five. Spithaler and Griffin won the heat races.
Howard Fraley edged Alan Dellinger by .003 sec. in the Coy Brothers Trucking E-Mod feature for his first victory of the season. Jack Young and Fraley made up the front row of the 26-car field during the 15-lap feature. Young took the early lead, with Jeff Sharp second and Fraley relegated to third. Sharp moved into the lead on lap No. 3 with a high-side maneuver out of Turn Four. Dwayne Clay followed Sharp around Young to move into second spot on the bottom of Turn Two. Clay closed right on the bumper of Sharp. Clay had his car working on the bottom, but Sharp found the cushion to his liking. With eight laps in the books, Sharp led Clay, Fraley and Young. Dellinger, who rolled off 24th, moved his No. 53 machine all the way in fifth spot with eight on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Sharp found trouble while leading on the 10th lap just after a restart. Sharp relinquished the top spot to Fraley when he spun into the infield with an apparent problem. Clay slotted into second, with Dellinger up to third. Dellinger did not stop there. He made an aggressive move on the bottom of Turn Three to take second from Clay with 12 laps in the books. The caution flag flew with 13 laps completed, allowing Dellinger to close right on the rear bumper of Fraley. Dellinger pressured Fraley with two laps to go, but Fraley maintained the lead. As the two cars circulated the final lap Dellinger dove to the bottom of the oval to make one last-ditch effort for the lead. Dellinger and Fraley raced wheel-to-wheel through turns three and four. As they came to the line, Fraley edged Dellinger by .003 sec. in the closest finish Sharon Speedway has seen this season. Clay finished third, Young fourth and Bob Diver fifth. Joe Gabrielson, Sharp and Dellinger were the heat race winners.
Pastor Tom Stiver from BrookfieldUnitedMethodistChurch won the eight-lap "Faster Pastor" race.
