Herrington shocks field, takes first Modified win at Brockville at age 16

BROCKVILLE-It was teen night in Brockville. It wasn't a school dance or anything like that, it was race night at Brockville Ontario Speedway. The tracks two major open wheeled classes were run and when the checkered flag fell a couple of 16 and unders were accepting the accolades in victory lane as Bobby Herrington of Sydenham and Napanee's Chris Raabe picked up the 358 Modified and DIRT Sportsman features respectively.

Herrington pulled the shocker of the season. The youngster picked up the lead from John Mulder on a lap 2 restart after a four car crash in turn four. Herrington dashed out to a lead as much as a full straightaway until a late caution bunched the field again. Now, Herrington had a slight issue to deal with multi time track champion Danny O Brien right on his tailpipe. O Brien finally got close on the final turn of the final lap pulling along side the teenager and his Sunshine Canyon-Stover Bus Lines Bicknell but Herrington won the drag race to the finish line for career Modified win number one. It makes him unofficially the youngest Modified feature winner in DIRT car history. Stephane LaFrance was a strong third followed across the line by Mike Adderley and Mark Hitchcock.

Raabe had a easier time of things, he started up front after a couple of weeks of mechanical problems and basically drove off into the distance at will in the 20 lap Sportsman main leading by almost three quarters of a lap at one point. Jason Riddell emerged from a hotly contested pack of cars for second in front of Randy Earl, Sheldon Hoogwerf and Adam Turner.

Brock Cullen seemed to have the 15 lap Street Stock finale locked up, until a tire went down that is. His loss was Dana Aikens gain as he took the victory fending off a late challenge from Steve Billings. Billy Code, Bob McKeown and Derrick Eaton were third through fifth respectively.

Adam Trickey led the entire 16 lap Rookie event, until turn 3 of the final lap when something broke and he went off the race track, that handed the honours over to Bob Rae with a narrow margin over Josh Kane. Jessica Power, Chris Bakker and Steve Barber rounded out the top 5. The race was red flagged early after Collin Tracey got airborne off turn 2 and landed on his side. He emerged uninjured from the crash. Ben Tucker got Jason Powers on the last lap to take the 10 lap McNamee Vintage car feature.

Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday August 11th, with a full race program including a 40 lap Invitational for the Street Stocks. It's part of a multi race season taking place this season across Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. The green flag drops at 7pm.
