TODD SHAFFER AND ED AIKEN WIN AT WILLIAMS GROVE
MECHANICSBURG, PA â Mr. Excitement was back in victory lane at the conclusion of Williams Grove Speedwayâs 25-lap sprint car feature Friday night and Ed Aiken won the Shop Drop 360 Nationals sanctioned by URC.
Steve Clabaugh set the early pace from the pole position while Todd Shaffer, who started tenth, was working his way to the front.
Shaffer was up to third by lap five and racing with Steve Buckwalter, when Buckwalterâs car appeared to blow a tire and flipped in front of Shaffer.
On the restart Clabaugh was able to maintain his lead until the half-way point when Shaffer drove by on the inside exiting turn four.
Once in front Shaffer pulled away from the field to score his first victory of the season and 34th of his career at Williams Grove.
The triumph also put Shaffer back into contention for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass track championship.
Don Kreitz, Jr. moved into second place on the 23rd lap and finished a full straightaway behind the winner.
Brian Montieth continued his exciting performances by moving from the 23rd starting position to finish third and earned the Magooâs Auto Transport Hard Charger award.
Fred Rahmer came from 20th to fourth and Jeff Shepard completed the top five.
Heats for the 30 sprint cars in competition were won by Steve Buckwalter, Jim Siegel and Rick Lafferty.
Mark Smith copped the consolation race.
Aiken led flag-to-flag in the Shot Drop 360 Nationals, but had to work for his $4000 victory.
Kramer Williamson, working the inside of the race track in turns one and two nearly passed Aiken on lap 12 of the 25-lap race, but a caution flag gave Aiken the break he needed. Aiken swiched to the inside line and outdistanced the field for his first URC win of the season and first victory ever at Williams Grove.
Chad Layton finished second followed by Williamson, Pat Cannon and Blane Heimbach.
Randy West, Kevin Welsh, Mares Stellfox and Trevor Lewis claimed heats for the 38 360c.i. sprint cars in the pit area.
The B-main was claimed by Kevin Nagy.
