By: Martin Bélanger
Cantley, PQ - Friday, August 3, 2007 – For a second Friday in a row, it was a hot and humid night at Edelweiss Speedway. A great crowd was on hand to see the Mohawk Race Parts and Accessories Series, which was a 50 lap feature for the Pro-Stock Category. Many drivers from other tracks showed up for this race.
Dion Oakes and Dave Bissonnette led the 12 car field for the Mohawk Race Parts and Accessories 50 lap Pro-Stock feature. Bissonnette grabbed the lead over Oakes, while a great battle for second between Oakes and PJ Peters as the first ten laps went really quickly. Oakes managed to keep his second and has eyes on the top spot. Joey Ladouceur grabbed the third on PJ Peters on lap 16 with an inside move in turn 4. At the halfway point, it was Bissonnette, Oakes, Ladouceur, Denis Gauvreau and PJ Peters. Bissonnette got through traffic while Ladouceur took this opportunity to pass Oakes for the second spot. On lap 30, Bissonnette had a 10 car length on Ladouceur. Gauvreau passed Oakes in traffic on lap 33 to take the third spot. Joey Ladouceur was closing on Bissonnette on lap 40, while the first caution came on lap 41 for Nicolas Vaillant. On the restart, Bissonnette kept his lead over Ladouceur but he tried hard to take over the lead but Bissonnette was able to resist. Ladouceur tried from the inside and outside but Bissonnette stayed in front while Gauvreau got in the mix and took the second spot from Ladouceur. Bissonnette was the winner, Gauvreau finished second, Joey Ladouceur was third, Dion Oakes fourth and PJ Peters completed the top 5. Only one caution occurred in this feature, which is pretty rare in those long distance races. Bissonnette had a perfect night as he won the second heat, Dion Oakes was the winner of the first one. It only took over 17 minutes to complete this feature.
A good field of 15 cars took the green in the 30 lap modified feature. Dave Heaslip took the lead over Denis Larocque on the first lap, but Laurent Ladouceur move quickly to second spot on the second lap and started to chase down Heaslip. The first caution came on lap 6 for cars that stopped in the backstretch. On the restart, Heaslip stayed in front while a good battle for second started between Laurent and Lee Ladouceur. Mitch Jock brought the second caution on lap when he stopped in the backstretch. Laurent Ladouceur powered in front of Heaslip from the outside on the issuing green but a tangle occurred in turn 1 on lap 9. Ladouceur stayed first when the green flag was waved for the third time. Ladouceur got himself a good lead over Heaslip, Heaslip finished second, Dagenais was third, Lee Ladouceur was fourth and newcomer Bobby Herrington completed the top 5. The last 21 laps of the feature went without a caution. Laurent had also won his heat race and Eric Gauvreau had won the other one.
Guy Regimbald grabbed the lead over the 20 car field in the Semi-Pro finale, but he got into a multi-car tangle which involved also points leader, Marc Lalonde right under the flag stand. Alexandre Gagnon was the new leader on the restart, everyone slowed on the backstretch and Greg Ogilvie passed everyone and led the next two laps until Bruno Boivin got sideway in turn 4. Ogilvie kept his lead over for another lap when Stéphane Carrière slowed and some car parts was also on the track in turn 1. Sébastien Bigras got the lead after a good battle with Ogilvie on the issuing restart. A two car tangle occurred outside of turn 3 and 4 on lap 7 to bring the fourth caution of the feature. Bigras was still first on the restart and got a good lead but another multi car tangle in turn 1 that was caused by some liquid on the track brought another caution on lap 9. Daniel Guindon was able to pass Bigras on the green to take the lead but Bigras was still close but got into an accident with other cars in the front of the grandstand on lap 13. The 22 car of Benoit Dubois got some heavy damage during this accident. Guindon kept the lead on the last two laps to win his second feature over Alexandre Gagnon and Lalonde who was involved in the first accident, got the third spot. Pascal Racette, Stéphane Carrière and Guy Regimbald won the heat races. A lot of action in this feature race, with a lot of cars that got some heavy damage on them.
In the 4 cylinders feature race, 10 cars took Pierre Bissonnette`s green flag. Jean-Marc Larose grabbed the lead and led for the first two laps until Mike Benedict slowed in the backstretch bringing the first caution of the race on lap 2. On the restart, Martin Bigras passed Larose and led the next lap until an accident occurred outside of turn 4. On the issuing restart, a great battle between Bigras and Larose was going on for the first spot for 3 laps, both cars swapped the lead until Larose grabbed it for good. Martin Lagacé who started seventh passed Larose on the outside on lap 8 and led the remaining laps to win his second feature of the year, Larose finished second and Alexandre Pilon completed the podium. Larose and Bigras had won the qualifying heats.
Another great night of racing at Edelweiss with over 60 cars in the pits which is, probably the best car count of the season at the speedway. All the races were run smoothly except of the semi-pro feature but gave a good show to fans who likes accidents. Do not miss next week when a complete race program including last race in the modified and semi-pro series plus a demolition derby which will pay over 1200$ in purse. It all starts at 7:45pm
