Babcock Wins Vern Fricke Memorial
Jeff Babcock used every inch of his car on his way to the checkered flag in the Vern Fricke Memorial Thunderstock Select at Limaland Motorsports Park. Babcock, who has won more Bud Thunderstock races on the famed high-banks, knew it was a non-points race and it would take a lot of muscle to win this prestigious race. Tim Rostorfer took second place and Frank Paladino, enjoying his best night in a Thunderstock, finished third and opened a few eyes.
The Bud Thunderstock, points-paying feature was led by pole sitter Barney Craig for the first ten laps. On lap 11, Craig hit the first turn wall and tore the sheet metal off the right front of his car. They yellow flag waved, Craig was put to the tail, and Tim Bowen was given the golden opportunity to win back-to-back features. Bowen wasted no time in establishing a solid lead and won his second feature of the year.
Last week, most people felt Frankie Luchini gave a win away by hugging the bottom of the track after vaulting to the lead on the high-side. This week, it was LOW-SIDE LUCHINI who jumped past Michael Tarlton and Todd Sherman to grab an early lead. Luchini never surrendered the bottom or the lead as he put himself in victory circle and qualified for this year's King of the Quarter-Mile.
The Race Trucks made their annual pilgrimage to the premier quarter-mile in the country Friday night. Mike Hicks passed Jerry Sawmiller on lap three in what was clearly the dominant race truck. Numerous cautions slowed the pace and bunched up the field. But Hicks pulled away on each restart and basically cruised to an easy win at Limaland Motorsports Park.
Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park presents the NRA-305 Challenge. The EFI-NRA Sprint Invaders will be back in action along with the Professional Computer Company Modifieds and Bud Thunderstocks. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m.
