Bill Sawyer, owner of Virginia Motor Speedway, in a surprise move, just 15 days away from the August 18, Mid-Atlantic Championship Series sanctioned, Ernie Shelton’s 28th Annual USA 100TM, announced a $3,000 bump in the previously posted purse for this storied event.
Jeff Geesey, Series PR Director commented, “With the increase, Bill and Clarke (Sawyer-GM) have made this prestigious show one of the richest one-day programs in the entire country as the total purse nears $68,000. If I told you we were ecstatic, that would be a major understatement. We are very honored and proud to be affiliated with the Sawyers and their entire staff as we help bring back the shine to Ernie’s pride and joy, the USA 100TM. With one of the best venues in the south as well the entire country hosting this event it is sure to attract a lot of consideration from many race teams across the eastern seaboard”, concluded Geesey.
“We along with the MACS Series want this event to continue to grow. I am personally thrilled and proud to be a part of it,” commented Bill Sawyer. We felt that for our second year hosting this event that one driver’s ability to win $11,000 was respectable, but I am bumping up second place money in the final 50-lap segment to $6,000 as well as increasing many other positions along the way. Now sixth in the final 50 will be $2,000 and 14th $1000”, concluded Sawyer. Clarke wistfully added, “The beauty of this (purse) increase is that it is spread though the field from second on down, which is what we and the MACS series believe in.”
Shelton commented, “I couldn’t be more pleased with this entire scenario for both the fans and drivers. I knew in my heart, when we decided to make this event MACS sanctioned, and with VMS as it home; it was a great decision. This event will now in good hands and will grow. It is once again becoming one of the “must see” events for race fans and drivers; especially holding it at one of the premiere facilities in the country under the MACS banner”, exclaimed Ernie.
The race format finds the top 52 cars, divided in half, and placed into one of the twin, 25-lap qualifying events paying $1,000 to-win each. The top 12 drivers from each of the qualifiers will advance straight up into the final 50-lap show paying $10,000 to-win.
