Jeff Chesebro takes Russ Prentice Memorial BRP Can-Am Late Model race at Genesee Speedway.
Batavia, NY—August 4, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Thirty-Nine Late Models were in the pits for the running of the annual Russ Prentice Memorial race this weekend at Genesee Speedway with all the BRP Can-Am Late Model heavy hitters going up against the home track hero’s of Genesee Speedway which seen 3 of the 4 heat races won by Genesee Speedway Regulars. Jeff Bridge made his 1st appearance to victory lane in the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks and return visits by Pete Stefanski and Jason Hull.
Consolation Race #1 for the BRP Can-Am Series seen Bob Buonos dominate for the complete 10 laps as Jon Rivers grabbed the runner up spot to get into the feature event after a brief battle with Steve Dixon.
Quinn Sutherland and Dave DuBois battled for the top spot with Sutherland taking the lead early in Consolation Race #2. Sutherland would later give up the lead to DuBois and he would go on to win followed by Sutherland and Tim Kaufmann.
Jason Hull jumped to the early lead but Dan Norton wasted no time taking the top spot in the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stock feature and began to drive away from the field. Hull would take the lead back as Norton lost the handle and slowed coming off turn 4. Samantha Burch took a wild ride atop the front stretch wall bringing out the caution on lap 5. One lap later, runner up racer Dan Norton lost the handle and looped his #0 and left the speedway with mechanical problems. On the restart Hull retained his position holding off Russ Wassner and Bobby Dickinson. Another caution involving Samantha Burch brought out the yellow setting up a green/white checker finish. Jason Hull had no problem holding onto the top spot as he drove to his second feature win of the season.
Heat Winners – Heat #1 – 12b Brandon Aradine, Heat #2 – 14 Ken Hixenbaugh
Bill Weller took the early lead in the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stock feature with Joey Spicola and Jeff Maxwell in tow. Maxwell went to no man’s land and used the high side to pass Spicola for the 2nd position. Maxwell again utilized the high side and took the lead from Weller. Jeff Bridge powered by Jeb Walworth for the 3rd spot and set his sights on Weller and Maxwell. Bridge muscled his way by Weller for the runner up spot and began to mount a challenge for the lead with Maxwell. Bridge led only one lap of the race and it was the lap that counted and scored his first feature win of the season.
Heat Winners – Heat #1 – Jeff Bridge, Heat #2 – Joey Spicola
A special dash was set for the 29 Lap Russ Prentice Memorial race which involved a little twist. The field order was inverted after 5 laps and the remainder of the race was run in that order. Quinn Sutherland lucked out as he was tail when the competition yellow flew sending him to the front for the final 4 laps collecting the $200 bonus.
Brett Martin led the Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stock feature to the green for the 20 lap event. Brett Martin led the first lap by one one-thousandth of a second over Butch Zimmerman. Steve Lewis and Don Barnes freight trained Butch Zimmerman for the 2nd and 3rd spots. John Zimmerman would spin in turn 3 bunching up the field with 14 laps to go. Steve Lewis took he lead on lap with Brett Martin and Don Barnes battling for the 2nd spot. Pete Stefanski moved to the 3rd spot from his 7th starting spot trying to nullify the $100 bounty that BDK Construction offered for anyone that could put an end to Stefanski’s streak. Stefanski took it upstairs and cleared both Lewis and Barnes in a matter of a lap and began to check out on the field. No one would collect the bounty as Pete Stefanski would collect his 9th Genesee Speedway feature win of the season.
Heat Winners – Heat #1 – Pete Stefanski, Heat #2 – John Zimmerman
Rich Michael Jr. and Mike Williams would set the front row of the BRP Can-Am Late Models for the 29 lap Russ Prentice Memorial feature event. Mike Williams would lead the 1st lap before a big wreck in turn 4 resulting in a parking lot on the speedway involving Rich Michael Jr., Brian Kotarski, Justin Chaddock, Derek Boyle, Paul Grigsby, Steve Dixon, Tom Baker, Bruce Miller and Bob Babbitt. Mike Williams took the lead with Jeff Chesebro and Tim Dunham following his lead. Another multi car pile up in turn 1 halted the race, bunching up the field once again. Williams and Chesebro again walked away from the field. As the mid packers were jockeying for position Larry Knowles mounted the back stretch wall with an impressive sparks display and dismounted the wall and continued on still picking up a spot. Caution would fly on lap 15 for a fire on Neil Patterson’s #27. The race would get underway for 2 circuits before caution would again fly as Paul Grigsby and Tim Dunham came together in turn 2 resulting in Dunham to the pits with a broken tie rod and Grigsby to the back of the pack for rough driving. Larry Knowles and Bob Buonos appeared to be the movers on the track as they worked into the top 5 by lap 20. Chesebro would steal the spot from Williams on lap 23 and was thought to have ran away with the show but another twist was thrown at the late models as Jason Tingue stopped on the top of turn 2 setting up the finale as a green checkers finish. It could be anyone’s race now as Chesebro, Williams and Buonos were all bunched together ready to go head to head for all the marbles. Chesebro wouldn’t flinch and went on to collect the $2,000 payday and the 2007 Edition of the Russ Prentice Memorial.
Heat Winners – Heat #1 Brian Kotarski, Heat #2 – Justin Chaddock, Heat #3 – Pete Waldron, Heat #4 – Neil Patterson
