KALEY GHARST IN CONTROL OF HIS OWN DESTINY IN COX DESIGN
SOUTHERN IOWA SPRINTWEEK POINTS AFTER NIGHT SIX OF TEN
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (August 7, 2007) - With tonight’s rainout and cancellation of the $30,000-to-win Ultimate Challenge at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, the Cox Design Southern Iowa SprintWeek “Mr. Sprint Car” title is Kaley Gharst’s to lose with a maximum of only three point-paying rounds left for each competitor. The Decatur, Illinois, driver and Brodix Tournament of Champions invitational winner is not eligible to compete in Friday’s Factory Value Parts World Challenge round, so he can only gather points on his preliminary night and in the finale of the SuperClean Knoxville Nationals. However, the next three drivers behind Gharst in the current SprintWeek points (Wayne Johnson, Jonathan Allard, Jason Johnson) are in the same position. "Mr. Sprint Car" will pocket $2,500 at the end of the ten straight nights of sprint car racing between Oskaloosa and Knoxville.
Current fifth-place point chaser Brian Brown, who was not invited to the Brodix ToC, is eligible for the World Challenge after qualifying in Australia over the winter. However, as of today, Brian is a full 100 points behind Gharst. A Knoxville Nationals preliminary feature (Wednesday or Thursday), World Challenge invitational (Friday), and the SuperClean Knoxville Nationals finale (Saturday) each award 50 points to the winner. Thus, it appears that the “Mr. Sprint Car” title is mathematically within Kaley Gharst’s reach after his wins in the Thursday night ‘360’ Nationals preliminary main, the Saturday night Casey’s General Stores ‘410’ feature, and the Sunday night Brodix ToC invitational.
UNOFFICIAL TOP 15 IN POINTS: Kaley Gharst 232, Wayne Johnson 178, Jonathan Allard 145, Jason Johnson 140, Brian Brown 132, Travis Rilat 129, Matt Moro 127, Josh Higday 126, Garry Lee Maier 123, Gary Wright 123, Brett Mather 116, Darren Long 113, Rager Phillips 105, Shane Stewart 100, Chuck Hebing 95.
