McGowen, Gemmill on the move in NCRA modified
PARK CITY, Kan. (Aug. 7, 2007) – It’s back to action Saturday for the O’Reilly NCRA Modified Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol. After two weeks off, the mods roll back onto the 3/8ths-mile oval at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., for their third of five visits this year.
Hoping to continue their hot streaks are Brian McGowen and Troy Gemmill. Both have been in the top 10 in points most of the season. In just the last two shows, 81 Speedway and Hutchinson, they moved up several spots.
McGowen, from Frontenac, Kan., finished third at 81 and second at Hutch. That moved him from sixth to second in the standings. Gemmill is a second-generation driver out of Ponca City, Okla., who was fourth at 81 and first at Hutch. He climbed from eighth to fifth in the standings. Only 50 points separate them with four races to go.
Four-time defending series champion Brian Franz, from nearby Halstead, Kan., traditionally does well at 81, winning six of the last dozen NCRA shows held here. This year, three-time series champion John Allen and NCRA rookie Jeremy Massey have gathered the checkers at 81.
Allen won the May 19 season opener. Following him in the top five were Franz, Kenny Sweet, Brian Powers, and Greg Stephens. Massey was seventh and McGowen ninth.
Massey took the checker in the last show at 81 on July 14. Next in line were Allen, McGowen, Gemmill, and Stephens. Franz was sixth.
With only one win this year, Franz’ consistency has built a comfortable margin in the standings. He has the one win, four top fives, and six top 10 in six shows for a 200-point lead.
Massey and Stephens are also in the hunt for second. Massey is third, 10 points behind McGowen, while Stephens is fourth and trails Massey by 30 points.
