KALEY GHARST STUMBLES, WAYNE JOHNSON GAINS IN COX DESIGN
SOUTHERN IOWA SPRINTWEEK POINTS AFTER NIGHT SEVEN OF TEN
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (August 10, 2007) - As National Sprint Car Hall of Fame announcer Jack Miller used to say at the Knoxville Nationals, “HOLY COW!” Following his third place finish in last night’s SuperClean Knoxville Nationals preliminary night feature, Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma has inched closer to Kaley Gharst of Illinois for supremacy in the $2,500-to-win Cox Design Southern Iowa SprintWeek “Mr. Sprint Car” title chase. Gharst, who has led the points standings from night one (of ten straight nights of sprint car racing between Knoxville and Oskaloosa), had mechanical problems last night and only scored ten points. Johnson scored 48 points for his podium finish, and now trails Gharst by just sixteen points. Both drivers have just one more point-paying round left, the Saturday night finale of the 47th annual Knoxville Nationals.
Brian Brown, currently in third place, has an outside shot at the title as he has two points-paying rounds left, as he is eligible for tonight’s Factory Value Parts World Challenge invitational feature. Brian qualified for the World Challenge in January by competing at the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic at the Premier Speedway in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia.
UNOFFICIAL TOP 15 IN POINTS: Kaley Gharst 242, Wayne Johnson 226, Brian Brown 169, Jason Johnson 150, Jonathan Allard 145, Josh Higday 136, Don Droud Jr., 135, Travis Rilat 129, Matt Moro 127, Garry Lee Maier 123, Gary Wright 123, Brett Mather 116, Darren Long 113, Randy Martin 111, Rager Phillips 105.
