Wonderling scores FASTRAK win, Kaufmann and Maxwell pick up firsts of year as Dickinson, Lewis and Spatorico put another check in the win column.
Batavia, NY—August 11, 2007--By: Chris Rhynold, Media/Racer Relations Director
Mike Wonderling who was a former Genesee Speedway racer back in the late 80’s made his return to Genesee Speedway with the FASTRAK Crate Late Model and raced like he raced there just yesterday as he drove a flawless race and found his way to victory lane. Tim Kaufmann who has turned the wick up the last few weeks with some pretty solid finishes made his first trip to victory lane this season holding off Derek Boyle in 360 Late Model action. Don Spatorico continued his hot streak of the area tracks by coming out of the 10th starting spot to collect win #2 at Genesee Speedway this season. Steve Lewis collected the win and the bounty money as he held off hot shoe Pete Stefanski to earn his 2nd feature win of the season in the Pro Stocks. Jeff Maxwell got his first win of the season in the street stocks and Bobby Dickinson earned his 4th feature win of the season.
Jason Hull would pace the field to the green in the Dickinson’s Auto Service Mini Stock 15 lap feature with Dan Norton by his side. Hull would lead the 1st lap with Dan Norton and Randy Barclay in tow. Caution would hit the speedway on lap 2 when Henry Maier lost the handle of his #3 Mustang in turn 4. Randy Barclay would get the jump on the restart and take the 2nd spot from Dan Norton. Bobby Dickinson would start to challenge Barclay for the runner up spot on lap 6 and Bill Tice and Ken Hixenbaugh began to close in on the leaders. The yellow would again fly on lap 7 when John Giles spun in turn 4. Bobby Dickinson would power by Hull for lead before the yellow flew for Dan Norton as he would come to a stop on the outside of turn 2. Hixenbaugh would show why he is near the top of the point’s race. Hixenbaugh would pass Barclay and Hull on lap 12 and set his sights on Dickinson. Hixenbaugh might have been the fastest car on the track, but ran out of time as Bobby Dickinson picked up his 4th feature of the season.
Heat #1 – 14 Ken Hixenbaugh, Heat #2 – 328 Bobby Dickinson
Dave Bansmer would lead the 1st lap of the Bobcat of Buffalo Street Stocks feature and would only go 2 laps before the caution would fly for a multi car crash in turn 3. Jeff Maxwell would jump to the lead on the restart using the high side of the speedway and would begin to check out on the field. Colton Chappius would move to the runner up spot on lap 5 and began to pull away from the field and chase down Maxwell. Joey Spicola and David Downs would clear Bansmer and would begin to play catch up with the leaders. Bill Weller moved into the 5th spot and started to mount a challenge for the 4th spot with David Downs. Weller’s run to the front came to an end as he exploded a right rear and brought out the yellow as tire debris was scattered around the speedway. On the restart Chappius started to look to the inside of Maxwell and the two ran just about door to door for the final 2 laps with Maxwell picking up his 1st feature of the season.
Heat #1 – 60jr Colton Chappius, Heat #2 – 20 Matthew Pfalzer
Again this week the Greenlief’s Restaurant Pro Stocks had an all Zimmerman front row. Lap 1 would see both Zimmerman’s side by side at the line. Butch would take the lead on lap 2. John Zimmerman looked to the inside of Butch Zimmerman going into turn 3 and lost the handle bringing out the yellow. Steve Lewis would take over the point on the restart with Butch Zimmerman and Pete Stefanski following in his trail. Again this week, BDK Construction put up a $100 bounty for anyone that can put a stop to Pete Stefanski’s winning ways. Yellow would fly on lap 11 as Jim Burch spun in front of the leaders. Lewis would still hold the top spot as Butch Zimmerman was trying to mount a challenge. Stefanski moved by Zimmerman for the runner up spot and quickly reeled in Lewis. Steve Lewis would collect the $100 bounty and the his 2nd win of the season as he was able to hold off the hard charging Pete Stefanski.
Heat #1 – 11s Steve Lewis, Heat #2 – 6 Butch Zimmerman
John Haggarty would sit on the pole for the FASTRAK Crate Late Model feature which was presented by Gates Electric Supply and BDK Construction. Bobby Powell would take the early lead but the caution would fly before the first lap was complete as Jason Bridge spun exiting turn 2. On the restart Mike Wonderling shot to the 2nd spot as he and Bobby Powell would run nose to tail. Jason Bridge would again bring out the yellow as he spun exiting turn 4. Powell would slip up in turn 2 opening the door for Wonderling. Wonderling wasted no time as he passed Powell with ease. Wonderling a former Genesee Speedway competitor back in 1988 was turning laps like he raced here just last week. Wonderling made it look easy as he walked away from the field collecting the win in the first appearance of the FASTRAK Crate Late Models at Genesee Speedway.
Heat #1 – 29 Dave Lyon, Heat #2 –z1 Mike Wonderling
John Panattoni would be the pole sitter for the Troyer Race Cars Sportsman feature. Rob Pratt would jump to the early lead. Ricky Newton took his sportsman to the runner up spot past Panattoni on lap 2. Caution would fly on lap 5 as Tim Downs spun in turn 3 collecting Kerry Ball. By lap 8 Don Spatorico moved into the 5th spot from his 10th place starting position. 2 laps later Spatorico moved to the 3rd by Ricky Newton and John Panattoni. Things started to heat up on lap 16 as the Newton and Spatorico caught Pratt and Newton passed for the lead on lap 18 with Spatorico following him. Spatorico would pass Newton one lap later for the lead. Yellow would fly with 5 to go as Rob Pratt came to a stop at the top of turn 3 with a flat right rear sneaker. Justin Wright was on the move as he gained 10 spots and was in 3rd on lap 22. John Venuto got by Wright on the last lap to move to the 3rd spot as Spatorico who has been on a hot streak this season drove away from the field to collect his 2nd Genesee Speedway feature win of the season.
Heat #1 - 11n Ricky Newton, Heat #2 – 44v John Venuto
Rich Hale and Tim Kaufmann would set the front row of the BDK Construction 360 Late Model feature. Hale would lead the first lap with Brian Kotarski all over him. Kotarski would slip up letting Josh Pangrazio take the runner up spot. The yellow would fly on lap 4 for a 4 car pile up in turn 2. Hale would continue to lead on the restart but again, a multi car pile up in turn 3 resulted in another yellow flag. Don Newton, TJ Newton, Justin Chaddock, Dave DuBois, JJ Mazur, Bob Babbitt, Tom Baker and Rich Mogavero were all involved in the wreck. Tim Kaufmann took it to the high side of the speedway and took the lead from Hale and began to run away from the pack. Derek Boyle would clear Hale for 2nd and began to reel in Kaufmann. Brian Kotarski passed Hale on lap 9 and the top 3 ran off from the pack with Kaufmann still leading. Yellow would fly on lap 13 as Dave DuBois, Pete Waldron and Tom Baker would all come together in turn 4. Brian Kotarski was able to get to the inside Boyle and completed the pass for the 2nd spot. The caution lights came on for Justin Chaddock and Josh Pangrazio as they came together in turn 1. On the restart Kotarski got to the inside of Kaufmann but overdrove the corner and Kaufmann pulled away and Boyle got by Kotarski for 2nd. Kotarski would later be docked 2 positions for rough driving on the last lap as he attempted to pass Boyle and ended up colliding with Boyle in turn 4. Tim Kaufmann would drive to his 1st Genesee Speedway win of the 2007 Season.
