Brecht, Woodard, and Hull Enjoy Victory Lane
Limaland Motorsports Park's annual NRA/305 Challenge found 39 sprint cars ready to do battle for the bullring's supremacy. It was, in many respects, a battle of cubic inches on an extremely racey track. The battle that ensued ended up resembling a UFC cage match between two of the heaviest hitters in the game.
Last week's winner, Mike Brecht, used his front row starting spot to lead the first 10 laps as the likes of Dale Blaney, Darren Long, Mike Dussel, and current EFI-NRA Sprint Invaders points championship leader, Phil Gressman, sorted out who would challenge for the win. For Brecht, it was very simple; fly down the straightaways and turn left when you get to the wall! Gressman was able to show Brecht his nose a couple of times but Brecht never surrendered the lead.
Earnie Woodard began the evening trailing Tony Anderson by 80 points in the Bud Thunderstock season championship battle. Woodard knew that he would need to win the race and hope Anderson suffered some bad luck if he was going to be able to cut into Anderson's grip on the championship. Woodard shot to the lead on the first lap with Jeff Babcock in tow. Fifteen green laps later, Woodard pulled into victory lane to savor another victory at Ohio's Quarter-Mile of Thunder. While Woodard was celebrating, Tony Anderson was idling back to his pits knowing his third place finish moved him one race closer to another championship.
By far, the most exciting race of the evening was the duel between Bill Lewis and Todd Sherman in the Professional Computer Company Modifieds feature. Sherman, who built the car that Lewis was driving, showed why he is so well respected by his fellow drivers as he raced the challenging Lewis hard and clean. Lewis would dive low and Sherman would leave just enough racing room for Lewis. Then Lewis would go high and Sherman would leave him a car width coming off the corners. The crowd was almost spellbound by the dance on dirt these two drivers were performing.
But, as fairy tales go, there's always danger lurking in the shadows. Friday night, the danger came in the form of #40----Terry Hull. Some drivers win races by muscling their cars around the track. But Hull, he thinks his way around the track. Hull is like a leopard. Always smooth, never out of position, concealing his intentions until it's time to strike. As Sherman moved to duel it out with Lewis, Hull inched into the picture. On the last lap, it was Sherman, Lewis and Hull going into turn one. As the three drivers entered turn three, they were three-wide with Hull digging away at the bottom. As Jon Burden waved the checkered flag, he had the best view of an incredible win by Terry Hull. Todd Sherman finished second and Bill Lewis in third. All three drivers deserved the win. The biggest winner was the crowd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your next chance to be part of the celebration of 72 years of racing action is next week when Limaland Motorsports Park hosts the return of Mini Sprint Madness. The Professional Computer Company Modifieds and Bud Thunderstocks will also be in action on Ohio's Quarter-Mile of Thunder. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing on America's premier quarter-mile begins at 7:30 p.m.
