Keegan Picks up Second Win of Season in Sprints, Sharp Notches Second Victory in E-Mods on 13th Night of Racing at Sharon Speedway
Swartzlander holds off Rougeux to take modified finale
HARTFORD, Ohio; August 11, 2007 - With only three nights of points racing remaining this season, Jody Keegan (Sprints), Brian Swartzlander (Modifieds), Jeff Sharp (E-Mods), Steve D'Apolito (Stocks) and Nick Miller (Limited Sprints) visited victory lane on Saturday in the Fantastic Five's 13th racing night of 2007 at Sharon Speedway.
Jody Keegan started on the pole, led every lap and notched the victory in the Warren Harley-Davidson Sprint Car 25-lap feature. Keegan and Broc Martin were on the front row in the finale. Keegan quickly jumped out to a sizeable edge over Russ Sansosti in second spot. Keegan, who was racing his own car for the first time this season at Sharon Speedway, jetted out to a one straightaway edge over the pack. With five laps on the board, Keegan led Sansosti, Dan Shetler and Martin. Despite catching up to lapped traffic with 10 laps completed, Keegan maintained his one straightaway edge ahead of Sansosti. As the race approached the halfway point, Keegan found himself in heavy lapped traffic. However, the Fremont, Ohio native remained calm despite the intense pack of lapped machines in front of him. The battling took place behind the streaking Keegan, as Shetler found himself closing in on the rear of Sansosti in a scruff for second. Also, Kevin Schaeffer, who started 12th caught Martin in a battle for fourth position. Schaeffer made a move stick on the 23rd circuit. After setting him up in traffic, Schaeffer darted under Martin as the cars exited Turn Four. All this took place behind Keegan, who consistently had the fastest car on the track. Keegan controlled the pace all 25 laps, and went on to score his second feature victory of the season. Sansosti finished second, with Shetler third, Schaeffer fourth and Martin rounding out the top five. Schaeffer and Sansosti scored wins in the heat races.
Jeff Sharp took top honors in the Coy Brothers Trucking E-Mod division's 15-lap feature, which was his second victory of the season. Russ Dunn and Sharp made up the front row at the start of the 15-lap feature. Dunn scurried out to the lead as the cars exited Turn Two on the first circuit, but the caution flag flew before one lap was in the books. Alan Dellinger, who rolled off fourth, headed to the pit area on the caution with a mechanical problem. On the complete restart, Dunn once again took the lead, with Bob McCann moving to second. Before the third lap was on the board, Sharp found his way back to second, but slipped above the cushion in Turn Two. Dwayne Clay benefited from Sharp's slight mistake, and moved into second spot. A yellow flag halted the action on the fifth lap, just as Dunn built a slight cushion over the field. On the first lap after the yellow, Dunn slid into the marbles in Turn Three, opening the door for Clay. Despite a charge, Dunn maintained the top spot. One lap later, the two leaders dove hard into Turn Three, with contact being made between Clay and Dunn, sending Dunn spinning out of the lead. Both cars headed to the pit area with damage after the incident. The big beneficiary of the incident between the two leaders was Sharp, as he elevated to the top spot in the scoreboard. When the cars got back to racing, Sharp led McCann, Bob Diver, Greg Cizmar and Steve Haefke. Despite a pair of yellow flags with six laps to, Sharp remained the car to beat in the final stages of the event. Sharp built a 10 car length edge, and went on to score his first victory since May 26. McCann crossed the line in second, with Diver third, Cizmar fourth and Haefke fifth. Dellinger and Dunn were the heat race winners.
In the 25-lap Gibson-Governor Insurance Modified feature, Brian Swartzlander scored his second win of 2007. Front row starters Rob Kristyak and Rex King, Jr. paced the field to the green flag in the feature. Kristyak used the cushion to take the early lead, but the man on the move was Rex King. King charged from fifth to second on the bottom of the oval before the cars completed a lap. King did not stop there, as he quickly pulled alongside Kristyak. The two jockeyed side-by-side for a pair of laps, before King made the bottom stick out of Turn Two on the fourth lap. King took the lead from Kristyak, but the margin was slashed when the caution flag flew on the sixth lap for a Chris Dye spin. With the field lined up, the green flag came back out, and King once again jetted out to the lead, with Kristyak second and Swartzlander third. With 10 laps on the board, King held a 20 car length edge over Kristyak and Swartzlander. With the race halfway home, King led Kristyak, Swartzlander, Jim Weller, Jr. and Russell Smith, Jr., who was making his first visit to Sharon. The current point leader, Del Rougeux, rolled of dead last due to the fact that he won the past three features. He charged to seventh from 24th spot in 13 laps. Meanwhile, back at the front, Rex King slowed on lap No. 16 with a flat tire on the front stretch, handing the lead back to Kristyak. Swartzlander peeked under Kristyak for a pair of laps, but was unable to make the move stick. On lap No. 18, Swartzlander's machine stuck exiting Turn Two, which allowed him to beat Kristyak to the apex of Turn Three, and ultimately taking the lead. Behind Swartzlander, Rougeux continued his furious charge to the front of the field. He carved under Kristyak to take second with two laps to go. All he needed was a caution to catch Swartzlander. Rougeux got his wish when the yellow flag came out with one lap to go, setting the stage for a last-lap duel between Swartzlander and Rougeux. Swartzlander drove one flawless lap to take the checkered flag for the second time this season. Rougeux finished second, and should be commended for an incredible charge from last to second. Russell King started 10th and drove a steady race to finish third. Kristyak crossed the line in fourth and Jim Rasey rounded out the top five. Swartzlander and Kristyak won the heat races.
Steve D'Apolito made a late pass to score the win in the 15-lap Tom's Sewer and Drain Service Pure Stock feature event. Allan Hudzik and Lonnie O'Brien were the front row starters for the feature. The front row starters tangled in Turn Two, sending both cars back to the back of the pack before the first lap was completed. With the front row encountering trouble before a lap was completed, Charlie Jasinski and Mike Aley became the front row starters for the feature. When the race took the green flag, Jasinski took the lead in front of a 10-car traffic jam for second. Tim Burns took the spot, with Bruce Redmond third. Redmond threaded the needle on a lap three restart to snag the lead with a savvy three-wide overtaking maneuver. Redmond pulled out to 10 car length edge over Chris Hake in second and Steve D'Apolito in third, just before the yellow flag halted the action with seven laps to go. Hake looked to take the lead on the restart, but Redmond held his ground. Meanwhile, all of the jockeying between the top two allowed D'Apolito to close in on the top two. D'Apolito dove to second spot under Hake as the cars entered Turn One on the 11th circuit. D'Apolito quickly caught Redmond, and kicked off two laps on side-by-side racing for the top spot with three laps to go. He managed to get the run he needed out of Turn Two with two laps to go. D'Apolito cruised around the oval for the remaining lap to pick up his second feature of the season to extend his points lead. Redmond finished second, with Hake third, Burns fourth and Jasinski fifth. D'Apolito, Hake and Jasinski won the heat races.
The final feature of the night sent the Limited Sprints on to the 3/8-mile oval, with Guy Griffin picking up his sixth win of the season, but was disqualified because he lost his muffler, handing the victory to Nick Miller. Miller and Nate Stein paced the field to the green flag at the start of the feature, and the battle was on. Griffin made an aggressive three-wide maneuver to snag the lead into Turn One. However, Stein came right back to the lead before the cars reached Turn Three. All this took place on the first lap. However, Griffin regrouped and closed in on Stein and made his move on the cushion in Turn Two. Griffin managed to take the top spot and cruised out to a lead. With the race halfway in the books, Griffin held a 10 car length lead over Stein and Miller. Miller made a move for second spot on the eighth lap, which ended up being the winning pass. Although Griffin crossed the line in first, Miller was the winner because of the technical infraction. Stein was second, with Eric Williams third, Brandon Spithaler fourth and Jason Scoville fifth. Stein won the heat races.
