FULTON, NY (August 11) On Canale Insurance night at Fulton Speedway on Saturday, Alan Johnson took advantage of a top five starting spot to grab his fourth DIRTcar Modified feature win of the year. Friday night's Brewerton Speedway feature winner Steve Hulsizer chased Johnson throughout the 35-lap distance but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Other winners on the night were Shawn Donath in the DIRTcar Sportsman, Timmy Sears, Jr. in the Gypsum Express Crate Sportsman, Billy Clark Jr, in the UMP Pro Stocks, Nick Rizzo in the UMP Street Stocks, and Jon Shumway in the 4-Cylinder Enduros. The Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club saw Bill Kisselstein win the 1950s division, Phil Claussen the 1960s, and Jim Kite the 1970s.
At the start of the 35-lap Modified feature Steve Hulsizer out-raced the field to the first turn to lead the opening lap. Russ Hefti got a great jump at the green flag and gave chase after Hulsizer. Alan Johnson used a lap-three outside power move coming off turn two to grab the top spot away. When the race hit the 10-lap mark Johnson was comfortably out front followed by Hulsizer, Hefti, Kevin Bates and Chad Phelps.
With Alan Johnson leading and Hulsizer not being able to gain any ground the yellow flew just before the halfway mark setting up the final side-by-side restart. When the front two exited turn four Hulsizer got the jump on Johnson and led the pack into turn one. Hulsizer would lead the next five laps before Johnson once again blasted by in the Bully's Truck Stop, Bicknell Experimental, No.14j. Once back in the lead Johnson easily ran the last 12 circuits unchallenged for the win. Hulsizer, Hefti, Tom Sears, Jr., and Chad Phelps rounded out the top five. Vinnie Vitale, Jim Witko, Willy Decker, Kevin Bates and Brett Tonkin completed the top ten.
"I've got to really thank this crew. They have been working so hard on this new car," said Johnson from victory lane. "We keep trying things on this experimental car and it just keeps getting better," finished up Johnson.
In the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap Feature Stewart Garrison led the opening laps before Shawn Donath was able to blast by and grab the lead. For the next 15 laps Dave Reilley in the Pit Stop Convenience Stores, No.4 tried all of his years of experience to get by Donath, but to no avail as Donath was first under the checkers for his track-leading fourth win of the year. Dave Reilley held on for second followed by John Pietrowicz, Anthony Steiner and point leader Jeremy Pitcher.
After his win Donath stated, "This is the best the track has been in awhile. You could race anywhere. I knew we had to get to the front quick before the moisture went out of the track. Every week this Daniels and Maryfield team gives me a great car."
Bill Clark, Jr. totally dominated the UMP Pro Stock 20-lap feature. During the race Clark built up a consistent straightaway lead over the rest of the field. Even a green, white, checker finish couldn't slow down Clark. With the win Clark now holds the point lead over Jason Parkhurst by 4 points. Jim Evans, Jack Terrell, Rob Seavy and Adam Hunt were the top five. Rusty Marsden, Jerry Button, Dave Briggs, Jason Parkhurst and Dwight Johnson rounded out the top ten.
"I owe this all to my team; they gave me a great car. All I had to do was just drive it, it was that good," said Clark after his dominating win.
In what could be called the best race of the night the UMP Street Stocks went green to checker in their 20-lap feature. Nick Rizzo in the No.115 grabbed the lead on lap-8 and never looked back grabbing his first ever win at Fulton. Steve Crouse could stay with Rizzo but could never mount a serious challenge settling for second. Ron Hawker, Dan Hoffman, Quentin Burton were third through fifth.
After a roof dance Rizzo had this to say, "This win means so much. We used to come here once a year and try to qualify for the VIC," When asked why he switched from Canandaigua Speedway to Fulton Speedway for 2007? "It was a matter of miles. I live in Wolcott and it's a lot closer to come here." Rizzo finished up by saying drivers at Canandaigua have bigger motors running on the half-mile speedway. He doesn't have the motor to compete there as another reason he switched speedways.
Timmy Sears, Jr., continued his winning ways in the Gypsum Express Crate Sportsman class, winning the 15-lap feature. The win was Sears' fifth of the season. Ron Ingison, Jake Reilley, Matt Cummo and Katelyn Kane rounded out the top five. John Shumway won the 4-Cylinder over Charles DeGroff, Joe Buske, Jr., Les Barker and Jerry Herbert.
