VERNON , NY- With weather moving in, Utica-Rome Speedway management pushed the show off at a fast pace, with the final checkered falling just before 8 p.m. after a 5:30 p.m. start. Standing in victory lane after the dust settled on Bishop Print Shop night was Todd Burley, who dominated the 358-Modified event for this second win of the season.

At the drop of the green flag, fifth place starter Todd Burley immediately went to work, going from fifth to second by lap three of the 30 lap affair. As lap seven was going into the books, Burley rocketed by the outside of early leader Gus Schmidt to take the lead.

While Burley was steadily pulling away from the field, Stewart Friesen and Pat Ward were making their charge to the front of the field. After a third of the race was completed, it was Burley out front being chased by Schmidt, Friesen, Ward, and Willy Decker.

As the race wore on, Burley would open a huge lead that he would never relinquish as he sailed to his second win of the season at the Vernon oval. Friesen, Ward, Decker, and Bobby Varin would round out the top five spots.

In Sportsman action, Jack Miller would lead the field for the opening two circuits with Brad Alger taking over on lap three. On lap five, contact between Alger and Danny Varin, as the battled for the lead, sent Varin over the banking in turn three with Alger going pitside with a flat tire. 10th place starter Casey Williams was handed the lead during the altercation and for the rest of the 20 lap event, Williams would have to fend off Alan Barker to score his second win of the season. Chasing Williams and Barker across the line were Matt Janczuk, Jessica Zemken, and Steve Way .

Chris Mackey made it two in a row in the Pro Stock ranks after overtaking Chad Ray for the lead on lap two after starting 10th on the grid. Behind Mackey at the end of the 20 lap grind was Tom Denton nipping Jerry Holmes at the line for second with Bill Knapp and AJ Digsby trailing.

The 15 lap Pure Stock event saw Curt Prevo and Russ Marsden take turns up front it was Ron Hawker that the rest of the field was chasing at the checkered flag. Hawker started 10th and took command by lap six as he raced to his second win of the season. Marsden, Chris Carr, Rocky Marsden, and Tim Janczuk filled out the top five spots.

Resuming their battle from last week was Aaron Jacobs and Dale Caswell as they spent the first half of the 15 lap IMCA Modified event racing side by side for the lead. Caswell would win the battle this week as he got by Jacobs for good on lap seven and would motor away to take his sixth win of the season. Jim Roberts, Jacobs, Jeff Jones, and Bob Banks chased Caswell to the finish.

Next week, August 19, the Nye Auto Group and Andy’s Speed Shop present Twin 20’s for the 358-Modifieds plus double points for the Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. The IMCA Modifieds will compete in a regular event. Gates open at 3 p.m. with racing set to go at 5:30 p.m. More information can be found at www.uticaromespeedway.com or by calling (315) 829-4557.
