All Stars Serving Up Gumbo in Mid-August.
CAMARGO, IL (8-8-07) Gumbo is defined as a hearty stew or soup
originating in Louisiana, and found all across the Gulf Coast of the
United States and into the US South. “Gumbo” is also what Riverside
International Speedway calls its clay racing surface. It has always been
addressed as such. No other motorsports facility has ever used such a
description. It is pure river bottom gold. Thousands of years ago,
Riverside International Speedway was under the Mighty Mississippi. When
the water receded, West Memphis sat on the kind of clay others pay good
money to have trucked to them. “The Ditch” rarely needed replenishing
and when the sun sets on Arkansas, the moisture rises up through the
surface to grip like no other.
Riverside International Speedway has probably produced more
nationally-known racers than any other. Hooker and Rick Hood, Sammy, Sam
and Jeff Swindell, Hoyt and Greg Hodnett, Bobby Davis Jr., Lee Brewer,
Elmer Gray, Chuck Amati, Alvin and Wimp Gatlin ,Hoyt and Eddie Ray
Alexander, Zane Ray Walls, Ted Fink, Ray Bugg, Bubby Jones, Benny
Howard, Buford Ward and many, many others. Legendary racers, legendary
races, and legendary fights.
The All Star Circuit of Champions will make a rare visit to the speedway
during the Elvis Days celebration on August 17^th and 18^th , bringing
their own brand of winged 410 sprint car excitement to the mid-south
region. Wheel to wheel, ground pounding action by 850 horsepower,
fire-breathing, methanol fueled sprint cars. Paying $3000 to win on
Friday and $5000 to win on Saturday will draw cars from all points
around the region to do battle with the traveling All Star group to
compete for the top prize.
The All Stars, in addition to the on track excitement, will also bring a
tight points race along with them as veteran racer Danny Smith currently
leads the All Star season points chase over defending champion Greg
Wilson who is nipping at his heels as he fends off third place
challenger Brian Paulus. Paulus also leads the 2007 Rookie of the Year
chase as he previously had never run full time with the series.
Series president Guy Webb is excited about the All Star’s visit to “The
Ditch”. “Clayton Allen has done a fantastic job of bringing Riverside
back to life and we’re looking forward to visiting his facility. The All
Star series is one of the longest running 410 sprint car organizations
in the United States and many racing legends have competed with the All
Stars over the years. Bringing our brand of entertainment to a facility
so rich in sprint car history is something we have looked forward to and
we expect to see some great racing.”
Riverside International Speedway – “The Ditch” – is located just west of
the Mississippi River at 151 Legion Rd in West Memphis, Arkansas. Ticket
prices: 2-Day Pass - $40; 2-day Pit Pass - $60. For ticket information
please call 901-840-1974.
The All Stars will be in action tonight as the Thunder Through the
Plains kicks off at Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, KS on Monday August
13th. From there the series heads to RPM Speedway in Hays, KS on Tuesday
August 14th. After a short break the teams travel south to West Memphis.
