POINTS RACE IS HEATING UP
As the dog days of summer arrive, all of the heat is between cars in the line up at Brighton Speedway as no more than 130 points separate the top 2 drivers, in each of the 5 classes. Following pedal to the metal dirt flying racing action, and a visit from the Southern Ontario Sprint(SOS), it is clear that drivers will be racing until the end to determine who will be division points champions at the end of the 40th Anniversary Season.
The closest race is the Quinte Towing Stingers with 40 points separating Andy Fletcher (#42) of Carrying Place and Del McGregor(#19) of Brighton. Rookie driver, fifteen year old Henry Schneider (#4) will be one to watch as he took a double win and then lost his car to another hopeful fan in the claimer rule clause for this class.
A mere 65 points separate “skirts in the dirt” Caley Weese (#77) of Carrying Place and the #1 of Stacey Ferguson from Picton in the Bill’s Johns Comp 4 Division. Following a double win on Saturday, including his first complete Mister Signz Pure Stock Feature Checker, Adam Switzer (#46) of Napanee, currently is only 75 points behind Gary Vandertoorn (#8) of Brighton. Another Bainer’s Radiator Canadian Modified Feature Win launched the #32 of Doug O’Blenis from Shannonville into first place followed by Rob Flindall (#75) of Peterborough. Only 55 points separate these two consistent drivers.
The highest lead in points, only 130 of them, is held by the 2006 Brighton Automotive Pro Stock Champion Ronnie “the Rocket” Wadforth (#40) of Trenton. He is being chased by Brian Cross (#08) of Picton who challenges the other Pro Stock drivers each and every turn of each race.
Completing the show on August 11th, Rapid Rad and Star 93.3 presented the SOS Sprints which saw 20 of the winged machines prepared to take the checker. It was Kevin Job who had flown in from Zurich that afternoon and quickly tuned in his new ride to dominate the 2 cautinon feature race. Following the second restart, caused by a Dick Mahoney spin in turn two, Job saw the opportunity he was looking for and drove underneath the leaders entering turn three. He was in front as they all exited turn four. New to the SOS Series, but not to fans, was newcomer Chris Jones. Recently leaving the DIRT 358 Modified ranks the previous Brighton Speedway well-known finished fourth.
The next race event is the Sundance Autos Free Car Giveaway night on August 18th, 2007. Every individually purchased adult ticket through the gate will have the chance to win an automobile. Green Flag flies at 7:00pm. On Sunday August 19th the Hotch’s Auto Parts 200 Lap Summer Slam Endurance Race will hit the 1/3 mile clay oval with a 2pm start time.
