Sportsman are added to the September 16 show at Cornwall Motor Speedway
By Martin Bélanger
CORNWALL, On – Wednesday, August 15, 2007 – Something new was added to an already busy Sunday September 16 afternoon as the sportsman class will have a 40 lap feature race with a cool $1000 to the winner.
The idea of this project comes from a sportsman driver named Steve Savoie who wanted to race on the Cornwall oval for many years. He talked to Ron Morin about his plan and M. Morin showed a lot of interest in this venture. He is not the only one who showed some curiosity as over 40 cars, many of them are Granby and Drummond regulars, are expected to show up. The sportsmans rules of Granby and Drummond will be in effect with the 2 barrels carburator (4412) applied with no gear rule. For information about the rules for this race, you can contact the Autodrome Granby tech at: autodrome@videotron.ca. Some drivers from other tracks were also interested in making the haul to the ¼ mile bullring for this race.
Only 24 cars along with a press choice, will take the green in the feature. A ‘B-Main’ of 12 laps is also on the schedule for the cars that were not able to qualify in the heats. The top 4 in each heat will be taken and the others will go the B-Main. A draw will be made before the start to determine the starting positions in the heat races. The purses are quite interesting for the drivers, the winner will receive 1000$, second 750$, third 500$, fourth 400$, fifth 350$, sixth 300$, seventh 275$, eight 250$, ninth 225$, tenth 200$, eleventh 175$, twelve 150$, thirteenth 125$ and from fourteenth to twenty-fifth, it will will be 100$. All cars that were not able to qualify for the feature will receive 50$ in money.
Along with the sportsman, it will also be the last race of the Stock-Car Challenge that included races at Brighton, Edelweiss and Brockville. Many outsiders are expected for this 25 lap feature in the Semi-Pro class. The rookie category will see some action as they will compete in a 25 lap finale. A backward race and the second edition of the demolition derby are also on the schedule.
The pits will open at 12:30pm and the first race is scheduled to start at 2pm. The general admission price will be 10$ and it will cost 20$ to have access to the pit area. It will be an exciting afternoon for everyone who likes great action.
