Chuck Hebing Cleans Up With ASCS Patriot Sweep at Canandaigua

Canandaigua, NY – August 18, 2007 – By Rich Vleck, Canandaigua Speedway Correspondent

Chuck Hebing might have won the first ASCS Patriot race of 2007 at Canandaigua if it weren’t for motor issues. On Saturday he was flawless, dominating the second stop of the year at the “Land of Legends.”

Just 19 hours after capturing another set of double checkers, the “Cobra” led all 25 laps of the $1,500-to-win A-Main, lapping up to the fifth position to win his seventh ASCS feature of the year, the 24th of his decorated career that began with a win at Canandaigua four years ago to the week.

After placing his F/A Products/ Cobra Trailers No. 45 Maxim in Victory Lane, he proceeded to climb up for a wing dance, showing how much the win meant for him. “It’s always nice to win in front of the hometown fans, the ones that saw me run the Modified here for so many years,” said the Ontario, NY driver. “The track was great tonight and I was really good on the top.”

In traditional fashion, the wide and spacious ½-mile slicked over by feature time, allowing for the drivers to run the extreme top or bottom of the track. Hebing chose the outside, which worked out just fine.

The current ASCS Patriot point leader won National Parts Peddler Heat No. 2 from a third starting position, but drawing a dead-last starting spot for the dash forced him get up on the wheel; after driving around Ken Pann to win the Pole Dash, he just needed to keep it up front.

Because Hebing technically won a prior race out of state at 1:30 a.m., when he drove underneath Dave Farney’s checkered flag at 10:30 p.m., he had won two sprint features at as many tracks on the same day.

While Hebing paced the field the entire distance, eyes were on Jason Barney, the winner of the June race at Canandaigua, who carved his way through the field from a ninth place starting position to finish in second. Barney ran the bottom of the speedway and was strong in turn two, but after moving up to second on lap 11, the Constantia, NY driver had trouble hitting that mark and remained four seconds behind “Cobra” the rest of the way.

“I saw on the scoreboard that Barney was moving up through there so I knew he was going good and that I had to keep pressing,” noted Hebing after the race. “I guess he ran the bottom but I wasn’t going to move down there unless he showed me a wheel.”

It was the fourth win for Hebing in the A-Verdi Storage Containers King of Central New York Series, closing him within just six points of Barney with only one race remaining at Fulton. Hebing will have to beat Barney by at least two spots to claim the crown.

For Jason Barney, second was okay, but he knew that the key moment in their night was on the opening lap of the second heat. While Hebing pulled away from the field, Barney spun around in turn one, bringing out the yellow and sending him to the back. Even though he raced back up to third, he started the feature in ninth, leaving him too much ground to make up in 25 laps.

Bobby Breen scored his best career finish at Canandaigua, placing in third. The Savannah, NY youngster moved around George Suprick for third early on and then by Ken Pann for second, but fell nearly a ½-lap behind Hebing before the finish. National Parts Peddler Heat No. 1 winner George Suprick stayed up top all race, crossing in fourth for his second-straight top-five. Jared Zimbardi was solid again, as he finished in fifth, the final driver on the lead lap. Zimbardi had to start scratch in his heat making the entire an uphill battle for the three-time winner in 2007.

Before the sprints ran their feature, the finale of the Leaf Racewear DIRTcar Sportsman Lake-to-Lake Challenge ran with one of the best finishes of the year. Dan Wiesner was the class of the field all race long, but a caution with one lap left was just what Tim Currier needed to score his second win of the year at Canandaigua.

The Auburn, NY sophomore Sportsman competitor roared to life coming to Starter Dave Farney simultaneously waving green and white flags. Currier attempted to forge ahead in turn two but when he made a bonsai move in turn three, he was finally able to pull even with the No. 66.

As the two came out of four, contact was made, getting both out of shape, and allowing Currier just enough space to win by only a few feet. “I knew if I could just get a good start I could drag race him,” said Currier in Victory Lane. “When I went into three I told myself I would not lift, and it worked out.”

While Currier was celebrating in Victory Lane, Todd Henderson was in his pit celebrating the title in the Leaf Sportswear Lake-to-Lake Sportsman Challenge. One of the few drivers to regularly run both Canandaigua and Black Rock each weekend, “Handsome Todd” scored a fourth place finish, easily making him the Champion.

Henderson had to finish within seven spots of Loren Lincoln to claim the top prize, a new suit from Leaf Racewear. Early on the defending track champion hit the wall and was stuck back in the pack, but as the race progressed he continued to move forward. After a lap 18 restart he jumped into the top-10 and rode it on to the title. In the four races of the series, there were four different winners, none of whom were Henderson.

Paul Guererri was solid again, placing in third, just ahead of Henderson and Eric Giguere, who completed the top-five. Twenty-one Sportsman were in competition.

Blane Smith continued to run strong in the UMP Street Stock rankss, scoring the win over point leader Mike Welch in the 15-lap feature. Nate Peckham was out in front early, but was unable to hang on to a top-five position. Behind the top two were Andy Fisk, Adam DePuy and Scott Smith.

In a wild PureStox feature, Vance Vanderwall nearly nipped Eric Chapman, but came up just short at the line. Vanderwall was underneath the No. 22t in turn four, coming to the finish, but could not keep the car stuck on the inside. Jim Cronin was the early race leader but drifted high just after halfway.

Also on hand on the special night were the Midstate Vintage Stockers. Norm Richardson captured the win in the 50/60’s division over Gordie Wood while Don Hyatt from Ontario, NY scored the win over Richard Applebee in the 1970s finale. Sixteen “blasts from the past” were part of this event.

All of the racing action on the night was presented by Fox’s Auto, Leaf Racewear and WACK 1420. For more information on all of the action at the Ontario County Fairgrounds, including the return of the Big Block Modifieds next Saturday, please visit www.CanandaiguaSpeedway.com.
