PAT WARD AND WILLY DECKER SPLIT TWIN 20’S AT UTICA - ROME SPEEDWAY

VERNON , NY- The stakes were high this Sunday evening, August 19, at Utica-Rome Speedway with Twin 20’s for the 358-Modifieds and double point for the Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks as teams were looking to solidify their title hopes. Pat Ward and Willy Decker were victorious in the 358-Modifieds with Steve Way taking the Sportsman main. Jim Normoyle took home the Pro Stock honors while Russ Marsden and Kevan Cook won the Pure Stocks and IMCA Modifieds, respectively on Nye Auto Group and Andy’s Speed Shop night.

Gordy Button powered his way to the lead at the initial green flag of the first of the Twin 20 lap 358-Modified from his outside front row starting spot only to yield the position to pole sitter Paul Kinney. Kinney’s reign at the head of the field would end on lap three when AJ Romano charged by for the lead.

While Kinney and Romano battled for the lead, Pat Ward, Willy Decker, and Stewart Friesen were working their way to the front. Ward would win the race to the front, as he went by Romano to lead at the halfway mark. Tenth place starter Ward would lead the remainder of the event, holding off a charging Decker to win this third race of the year the Vernon oval. Friesen recovered from an early race spin to place third in front of John Ramsey and Ted Lamb. In victory lane, Ward drew seven which inverted the top seven finishers in the second 20 lap affair.

In the nightcap 20 lap 358-Modified feature, Ramsey blasted to the lead from his fourth starting spot with Kinney in tow. The first half of the race went green with Ramsey out front with Decker gaining the runnerup spot on lap 10. Several cautions kept the field bunched up, including one for Friesen’s disabled racer, and when the field went back to green Decker went by Ramsey for the lead. Decker would march away to score his fourth win of the season. Lamb, Ward, Ramsey, and Kinney filled out the top five positions.

Larry Wight charged from his fourth starting spot to the lead on the first lap of the Sportsman main event and began to motor away from the rest of the field. A lap six restart brought Wight back to the field, and on the restart Mike Button began pressuring Wight for the top spot. As the top two battled for the lead, Wight spun in turn two which ended his bid for the win. Button took over the lead for one circuit, only to have sixth place starter Steve Way charged by the outside to have control of the field as lap 10 was being scored. Way would have to hold off Button and Casey Williams the rest of the way to score his first win of the season. Williams, Button, Alan Barker, and Matt Janczuk trailed Way across the line. Way’s win not only worth the $500 top prize, but he also received a set of heads, courtesy of Dart Manufacturing.

Jim Normoyle slipped by Bret Belden on lap six of the 20 lap Pro Stock main, and would hold off the trio of Belden, Tom Denton, and Jerry Holmes to get his third win of the season. Mark Effner filled out the top five.

Pole sitter Waylan Wilczek would lead the opening 11 laps of the 15 lap Pure Stock feature, only to have 13th place starter Russ Marsden to charge by as lap 12 was being scored. Marsden would take his eighth win of the season over Matt Ball, Wilczek, Chris Cunningham, and Tim Janczuk.

Fourth place starter Kevan Cook would lead wire to wire in the IMCA Modified to net his second win of the 2007 season, just beating point leader Jim Roberts to the checkered. Bob Banks, Jeff Jones, and Aaron Jacobs rounded out the top five.

Old Forge Powersports and Heroux Excavating presents next week’s program, August 26, with a regular show of 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and IMCA Modifieds plus Autograph Night.
