NCRA Sprints Return to the Track, Head North to Nebraska
PARK CITY, Kan. (Aug. 21, 2007) – Following a break for the Knoxville Nationals, it’s back to the track for the O’Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.
The winged warriors race in Nebraska twice this weekend. Aug. 23 they visit Doniphan’s Mid-Nebraska Speedway. The next day it’s on to North Platte for a stop at Lincoln County Raceway.
With just three shows left, two-time defending series champion Garry Lee Maier looks to close out the season with another crown. Maier, from Cimarron, Kan., has a 295-point lead over Mike Peters.
This marks the second straight year for the late season Nebraska swing. Last year at Doniphan, Maier was ninth with eventual season point runner-up J.D. Johnson third. Maier won his fourth race of the season the following night at North Platte, with Johnson again third.
This year, Maier is the only driver to have made all 10 features. He has four wins, six top fives, and eight top 10s. Peters and Johnson failed to make the feature opening night, but have each made the last nine.
Peters has been the most consistent driver this year. He has seven straight top 10 finishes, the last six in the top five. The Wichita, Kan., pilot has fourth-place finishes in the last four shows. His run of top 10s has moved him to second in the standings.
Don Droud Jr., of Lincoln, Neb., had been second most of the season. He missed the July 27 show because of a prior commitment and dropped to third in points. Before that, he had finishes of first, ninth, and 13th.
Johnson has moved to fourth in the standings. The Goddard, Kan., hot shoe has seven top 10 finishes in the last eight races. He has five straight top 10 finishes.
Former rookie of the year Stu Snyder has dropped to fifth. The Waverly, Neb., driver has only one finish in the top 10 over the last four shows. He trails Johnson by 45 points.
The series will close their season Oct. 6 as part of 81 Speedway’s annual Fall Classic.
