Barry White Captures First 2007 Win at Five Mile Point.
By Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media
Barry White raced to his first feature event win in 2007 last Saturday night at the Five Mile Point Speedway. The Berks County campaigner, known to his loyal legion of fans as the "Mighty Man From Mertztown," was up to the task as he bolted from his outside the front row starting position to grab the early lead in the 30-lap grind. Even though a few cautions tightened the field up at various times during the running of the event, White was able to drive away from the field when the green appeared.
A lap-23 caution again closed up the ranks and at this time the "Cresco Cruiser" Eric Palmer had methodically moved his way into contention as sat in third place behind the veteran wheel-twister Tom McGurrin. McGurrin had been running in the top two or three throughout the race. When the green flag flew on the restart, White motored away to grab close to a straightaway lead on the battling duo of Palmer and McGurrin. Plamer cleared McGurrin on lap-26 and as the laps dwindled down set his sights on the leading White.
Finding bite on the extreme inside of the raceway, Palmer began bottom feeding off of the inside lane and quickly closed the distance between White and himself. As the pair drove off of turn four on the final lap, White remained on the high side and Palmer dug down low. White got a great run off of the corner and would cross the finish line just inches ahead of Palmer. Five Mile Point track railbirds claimed the race to be the closet they had seen in years.
For the veteran White, the exciting win rejuvenated his racing endeavors. Earlier in the year he was struggling with finding the handle on the track with it's ever changing conditions, a situation that had many competitors stratching their heads as well. With some technical help from Speed Shop wizard, Ed Tauschman, the Barry White Racing Team has found a set-up that seems to be working out quite well for them. White also feels the car they purchased a short time ago has played a part in boosting the team's spirits and racing efforts.
The new car out of the Barry White racing stables is a 2006 Teo Design Bow-Flex Chassis. The car was purchased from Grandview campaigner Tracy Readinger, who is now concentrating on racing Midgets with the ARDC. The new machine carries the Barry White signature number 131, and carries the support of longtime sponsor Deka Batteries. A Curt Neiman 358 cubic inch 9 to 1 powerplant supplies the power to the race car and Alcohol is the fuel of choice for the Berks County based race team.
Barry White was a guest on the very popular CARQUEST Gasoline Alley TV/Internet Show on Monday night to talk about the great win and the fortunes and misfortunes of racing. White felt winning the event with the great quality field of racers on hand, was an honor for his racing and thanked Promoter Andy Harpell for a good track to race on.
Barry White Racing has always been one of the more popular race teams on the Eastern racing circuit. Friendly, courteous, helpful, and Mom's good cooking to help feed the team and friends, truly highlight their love for racing, as they make the three hour one way trek each week to race at the Five Mile Point Speedway. With their friendly spirit, it is easy to understand the popularity of the "Mighty Man from Mertztown" Barry White.
