Posted by Late Model Editor  |  08/24/07

Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series consultant Mike Swims was honored on Saturday, August 11th as he was among those inducted into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame located at the Florence Speedway in Union, KY. Mike along with his father, Mickey who was also enshrined at the same time were both on hand along with their families for the ceremony which took place before a packed grandstand.

Mike and Mickey Swims both are long-time track owners and promoters from Georgia. They promote Rome Speedway in Rome, GA and Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA. Mike was instrumental in the formation of the Hav-A-Tampa Racing Series along with Jimmy Mosteller in 1993. After Hav-A-Tampa Cigars bowed out of racing the series became known as UDTRA (United Dirt Track Racing Association) which Mike ran until selling the series. The touring dirt late model series then became the Xtreme DirtCar Series, which held its final race in 2004.

"Mike and Mickey's dedication to the sport of dirt track racing paid payoff with their induction into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame," Everyone with the series truly sends out our heartfelt congratulations to both Mike and Mickey said Ritchie Lewis, the series director for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. "Having known the Swims family for a number of years, I know they are respectfully thankful to good Lord above and to all the fans, promoters and drivers who make this the most exciting form of racing out there and I know they will not rest on their laurels as they want to continue to put on some of the best shows in all of dirt track racing at Rome and Dixie Speedways."

"I want to congratulate Mike and his father for their induction into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame" stated Bob Patison, Vice President of Lucas Oil. "Mike has been a valuable asset to the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and I have a great deal of respect for him and his passion for dirt late model racing."

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will head to Rome and Dixie on Friday and Saturday, October 5th and 6th for the "Shootout Weekend." There will be a $10,000 to win race at Rome on Friday with $15,000 to win on the line at Dixie on Saturday. There is also a $5,000 bonus to a previous "Dixie Shootout" winner if he is victorious on Saturday Night. For more information on both events you can log on to www.dixiespeedway.com.
