BOB BENNET WINS AT WILLIAMS GROVE
MECHANICSBURG, PA â Bob Bennett has led countless laps at Williams Grove Speedway over the years, but Friday night he led the only one that counted.
Bennett bested a strong field to win the 25-lap sprint car feature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway, his first victory at this historic half-mile after many years of trying.
Although he started on the pole, Bennett had to withstand the charge of Lucas Wolfe before claiming the $3000 victory.
Wolfe started tenth and moved into the top five on the second lap. He was third by lap eight, but Rick Lafferty managed to hold him off until the 15th tour.
After moving into the runnerup spot, Wolfe began to close on the leader. He had some opportunities to take the lead as he worked the bottom of the racetrack, battling side-by-side with Bennett.
After so many disappointments throughout his career Bennett refused to concede the lead on this night.
Greg Hodnett, who started 12th, moved into third on lap 18, and began to challenge Wolfe. While Wolfe and Hodnett duelled for the runnerup spot, Bennett was able to open a slight lead. Wolfe made a late charge, however, it fell several car lengths short as Bennett scored a popular victory. Wolfe settled for second. Hodnett held off Doug Esh to finish third and Lafferty completed the top five.
Jeff Shepard put himself back into the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass championship picture with a sixth place finish. Fred Rahmer, Chris Meleason, Craig Keel and Ryan Bohlke completed the top ten.
Heats for the 32 sprint cars in competition were won by Bennett, Rich Eichelberger, Clark Simonton and Lafferty.
Josh Wells won the consolation race.
In the companion URC sprint feature Wolfe moved from 19th to take the lead from Dave Ely on the 21st lap of the 25-lap event. Wolfe crossed the finish line first, but was disqualified when his car failed to make weight giving the victory to Ely. Michael Carber was second followed by Randy West, Davey Sammons and Curt Michael. . Robbie Stillwaggon, Dave Ely and Mares Stellfox won heats for the 31 URC sprints in the pit area. Lucas Wolfe copped the B-main.
