Todd Henderson and Rich Vleck Big Winners On Rain-Shortened Night at Black Rock
By Rich Vleck, DUNDEE, NY (August 24, 2007)- With rain wiping out half of the features on the night at Black Rock Speedway, and considering it was my only time in a racecar, and I won, I apologize if this press release is biased.
Just before a heavy lightning-filled thunderstorm hit Dundee, the Hoselton Automotive Crate Sportsman ran off a 20-lap event with just one caution. Larry Wight led a majority of the event for the second week in a row but was chased down by Todd Henderson, who moved underneath the No. 99 on lap 18 to pick up the win.
While Wight was second, Justin Wright was third for the second week in a row, with Mike Mahaney and point leader Brady Fultz completing the top-five. Fultz is in fine shape to win the Championship next week.
With lightning closing in on the Black Rock Speedway, the 1st Annual Media Race took to the track, with BRS Media Director Rich Vleck scoring the win in dominating fashion in the Front-wheel drive 4-cylinder enduro cars.
That was simply awesome, said I. It took me two laps to figure out whether I needed to use the brake or just lay off the gas, but after that I just stayed upstairs.
I started eighth out of 12 media personalities, all having no idea what to expect entering the first turn of the 10-lap event. Dan Turner jumped out front, but by lap four, I had the lead and checked out in my No Mercy/ Shure Microphones No. 1.
Greg Birosh started 11th, but moved into second just after halfway, but did not have enough to reel in his co-announcer. Greg wants a rematch.
I was slowed up in the lapped traffic with two to go and I saw somebody upstairs when I looked back off of four, so I knew I had to keep coming. It ended up being that lapped car.
The 358-modifieds, pro-trucks and Ladies Modified/Sportsman races were rained out. Same was to be said for the first leg of the Signs Plus of Kanona Black Rock/Woodhull 4-cylinder challenge, which will be postponed until next week. The street stocks were three laps in when the final blow came from Mother Nature.
Before the rain was an issue, there were four features that hit the track, with three of them being used a make-ups from last Friday.
Rich Sharpsteen led all 20 laps to win the make-up street stock feature for his fifth win of the season, becoming the second Sharpsteen of the night to pick up a win.
Frank Chapman and Chris Fisher were closing in on the No. 83T for much of the race, but with just two laps remaining, the two got together, handing over to Chris Force, who would hang on for second place.
Jared Hill dominated a caution-free Regional Truck Pro Truck make-up featuring, running away from Chris Leroux to score his first win in two months. Ironically the last time that Hill won, it was also a make-up feature.
Josh Sharpsteen made his first start in the former Dylan Cecee No. 12 Ride count, as he scored his second career win in thrilling fashion, making a last-lap, last-corner pass on C.J. Winslow to race him back to the checkered flag.
Winslow had inherited the lead after a three-wide battle on lap seven went a wry as Dylan Cecee, Tom Austin Jr. and early leader Courtney McMinds banged off one another to caution the races only caution flag.
Tom Austin Jr. did not clinch the championship, but only needs to start next week to claim the title.
