Stéphane Lafrance wins the Run What You Brung Feature Race
By Martin Bélanger
Cantley, PQ – Friday, August 24, 2007 – With iffy weather on the region, promoter Serge Lagacé decided to get the racing program in and he took the right decision with probably the best racing surface of all season at Edelweiss on this Run What You Brung night along with a special slick track enduro at the end of the night.
In the special Run What Ya Brung feature race for the modifieds, 13 cars took the green when Stéphane Lafrance took the lead when second place car Laurent Ladouceur blown something in the engine and the first caution came out. Lafrance took a straightaway turn only after two laps on the restart. Lafrance was alone in the speedway as he was the only one to turn laps in high 12s. On lap 13, Lafrance had a halftrack advance on second place Lee Ladouceur but Ladouceur gained some ground on him when they caught some traffic with 10 to go. Lafrance was alone on the track with Ladouceur trying to follow him. Lafrance led all 30 laps to win his first feature of the year at Edelweiss over Lee Ladouceur and Paul Pekkonen completed the podium. What a show given by those cars when Lafrance broke the track record during his heat win with a 11.926 lap. Laurent Ladouceur had also won the first heat.
In the 20-lap Pro-Stock feature, Denis Gauvreau took the lead from his second starting spot over Ghyslain Valade when Joey Ladouceur spun his car in turn 1 and 2 and this brought the first caution of the race on lap 3. Gauvreau kept his lead on the restart with Roch Aubin now in third spot and he is the back bumper of Valade. The #99 of Valade went too high and Aubin was able slip by and took the second spot when Lebrun stopped in turns 1 and 2 on lap 12. Gauvreau was still the leader on the following green while Dave Bissonnette and Joey Ladouceur closed in on Aubin for second spot. Both Ladouceur and Bissonnette passed Aubin on lap 19. Gauvreau led all 20 laps to won his second feature in a row. Ladouceur finished second with Bissonnette who completed the podium. Gauvreau had also won the heat race.
Dominic Gauvreau took the lead in the 15-lap Semi-Pro feature race with Benoit Dubois in second spot. Bruno Boivin was charging hard from the outside lane and was in the top 5. At the halfway point Gauvreau was still leading with Daniel Guindon now in second and was charging on Gauvreau for the top spot as the first caution came on lap 12 for an accident with Richard Brady and Sébastien Bigras. Gauvreau retain his lead on the restart but Guindon was challenging him. Gauvreau was finally able to hold off Guindon to win his third feature of the year over Guindon, Benoit Dubois finished third, Stéphane Carrière was fourth and Mark Trudeau completed the top 5. Gauvreau had also won the first heat with Carrière winning the second one.
A total of 9 cars took the green in the 12-lap 4 cylinders race while Gabriel Mercier took the lead and lead all the laps in the feature that only had one caution. Point`s leader finished just behind Mercier after starting in seventh spot and Martin Bigras completed the podium. Mercier had a perfect night as he won the qualifying heat.
In the special slick track enduro 25-lap feature, 18 cars took the green as Brian Deschênes won the feature, Marc-André Bernier followed him and Benoit Nadon finished third.
The champions will be crowned on a night in which every category will have a special 25-lap feature race instead of their regular distance. At the end of the night it will also be the Enduro Slick Track for 6 and 8 cylinders cars that was recently added to the schedule. Drivers will compete for a 500$ purse.
