ROBBIE STILLWAGGON HOLDS OFF ALL CHALLENGERS FOR FIRST CAREER URC WIN
SATURDAY NIGHT AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL
DELMAR, DE . . . . Robbie Stillwaggon of Burlington, NJ drove
the race of a life time on his way to his first ever URC BAR'S LEAKS
Sprint Series feature win on Saturday night at the Delaware
International Speedway. In just his second season of URC sprint car
competition, Stillwaggon not only won the feature, he did it in
thrilling style holding off Davey Sammons, Michael Carber and Ed Aikin,
three drivers that each took a serious shot at taking the win.
Stillwaggon started on the pole and pretty much checked out and ran to
hide from the rest of the field. But the typical URC finish was still
to unfold. And unfold it did. Early in the race, URC's 2006 Rookie of
the Year Davey Sammons made a bid for the lead, in chase of his first
career win. Stillwaggon fought back and protected the lead position.
Later in the race, Michael Carber made his run at Stillwaggon, actually
taking the lead on lap twenty-three. Stillwaggon fought back like a
well seasoned veteran and reclaimed the top spot with Carber spinning in
turn three on lap twenty-four. For the final circuit, the master of
consistency, Ed Aikin made his bid for the lead. Charging into turn
three on the final lap, Aikin pulled along side of Stillwaggon, then
lost momentum with Stillwaggon beating the challenge and going on to
his first URC win worth $2,000. Stillwaggon became URC sixteenth
different feature winner this season in just twenty-two events.
URC continues to deliver strong car count and once again, a field of
twenty-six URC sprint turned out for the program. The heat race winners
were Midge Miller, Stillwaggon and Scott Pursell as the Don Ott "B"
Main was won by Jason Clauss.
In the twenty-five lap feature event, Robbie Stillwaggon was the leader
for the first lap as the caution was displayed on lap two for Kramer
Williamson who stopped in turn two. On the restart, Stillwaggon was
quick off the point with Brian Brittingham in second and Ed Aikin third.
The second caution of the event was on lap four, a yellow for Mike
Kostic who spun in turn two while exiting the speedway.
When green flag racing resumed, Stillwaggon, Brittingham and Aikin
remained the top three. Davey Sammons was on a charge now racing in
fifth and firmly set with his eyes on the front runners. By lap ten
Sammons was fourth and he moved into second on lap twelve. Joey Biasi
then spun, regrouping the field at the halfway mark. One lap later,
Randy West and Jeff Davis tangled, displaying the caution flag once
again.
Stillwaggon retained his lead role but Sammons was closing with each
turn. Sammons made a challenge for the lead but Stillwaggon never gave
it up. Like a rocket, Michael Carber was now in the top five and
pointing the Bill Gallagher owned 5g right to the front of the pack.
With just five laps remaining, Stillwaggon was the leader followed by
Aikin, Carber and Sammons.
With two laps to go, Carber caught Stillwaggon and made the pass for the
lead. Stillwaggon never gave up and fought back to regain the top spot.
Carber returned the favor will another strong challenge, this time
spinning out while entering turn four. Carber also retired to the pits,
turning the lead over to Robbie Stillwaggon.
On the restart, with just one lap remaining, Ed Aikin made his one and
only bid for the win, diving deep to the inside of Stillwaggon while
entering turn three on the final lap. Stillwaggon held his line and
went on to take the win. Aikin followed in second with Davey Sammons
third as Mark Bitner and Brian Seidel made-up the top five.
