2007 Deer Creek Championships Decided
by Bill Nelson
August 25, 2007
Spring Valley MN
A great field of cars turned out for the last points race of the 2007 season at Deer Creek Speedway with 126 racers checking into the back. A whopping 40 USRA modifieds took to the track during the night in preparation of the upcoming USMTS Shows over the next two weeks. The track crew did an awesome job in getting the track back into a raceable shape after over 10 of rain fell on the speedway from Saturday to Thursday. A lot of time and effort was put into the speedway to get it smooth for the championship night.
The Tims Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks pulled onto the track for their eighteen lap feature event with the #58 of Scot Nelson having wrapped up the point title with an incredible thirteen nights of racing without ever finishing outside the top three (until tonight). Kevin Hager led lap one with Steve Eischens in second. Eischens moved into the lead on lap two with the field still running in tight quarters. Hager sat in second while Scott Olson and Nathan Finley battled side by side for the third spot. With five down Ryan Goergen caught fire and moved inside the top five and started pressuring Finley for third while Olson slid back through the field. A caution with eleven to go bunched the field back up. On the restart Goergen used the high side to power by into the second spot behind Eischens. Chuck Nerland moved quickly into the third spot on the restart. For the remaining laps Nerland worked on Goergen for the second spot as they ran nose to tail and side by side around the speedway but Goergen was hooked up and kept control of the spot behind Eischens who cruised home for his third win of the season. Hager came home fourth with Karl Hewitt Jr. rounding out the top five. Congrats to Nelson on his run and to Goergen for his best finish at the speedway, Goergen has shown remarkable improvement at the speedway in 2007.
Going into the final night of the Amsoil Dirt Track Series for the US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks Cole Queensland held a slim two point lead over Chris Groth. Groth won his heat race and heading into the feature the two drivers were tied for the championship so the driver finishing higher in the feature would win the championship. Troy Brand and Ted Marrs took the field to the green and ran lap one side by side for the lead. Brand would take the top spot with Jason Gabrielson and Dave Solum racing for third. Gabrielson took the spot while Aaron Wilson moved into fourth. Further back in the field the championship race was close. Queensland, Groth and Chris Klinger were two and three wide for the first five laps battling for spots. With fourteen to go Marrs started to work on Brand for the top spot and on the next lap took control of the feature event. A caution with twelve to go saw Groth going to the tail of the field. On the restart Marrs continued leading while Queensland and Solum raced for fourth. Wilson started to put moves on Marrs a lap later as they raced for the win. Queensland now set his sights on Gabrielson as they raced for third. A spinning Brand brought out the next caution and on the restart Queensland was able to get past Wilson for second but not able to gain ground on Marrs for another feature win. Groth was able to get inside the top ten but Queensland with his second place finish came home the track champion. Congrats to both Cole and Chris as they raced clean with each other all night and both showed great sportsmanship throughout the season.
Kenny Wytaske came into the final point night with the 2007 Deer Creek championship wrapped up in the Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified championship but was still determined to prove his driving abilities. On the initial start of the feature Tom Paulson took the early lead with Josh Angst in second. Wytaske and Jimmie Arnold raced for third With two completed Wytaske took over the second position and moved on the leader. Four laps completed saw Paulson loose the handle on his machine ending his night early. On the restart Wytaske showed how quick the Pierce chassis mod was as he jumped out to a good lead early on. Arnold now sat in second with Bryan Hernandez moving into the third spot. Andrew Wiste raced Mike Sample for fourth until Sample brought out a caution ending a great run for him. On the restart Hernandez moved into second with Jared Boumeester hot on his tail. Wiste now was racing with Brandon Davis for fifth. Davis started twenty first on the night and with ten completed was in the top five. A late race caution allowed Davis to finish off most of his charge as he worked into the third spot and raced Hernandez for second. Hernandez had the upper hand on the night and finished second behind Wytaske.
The Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Models pulled onto the track with Doug Herrick taking the early lead, Neil Eckhart moved into second early on as Jake Redetzke raced with Tony Bloom for third. Early in the feature the late models were two and three wide through the turns as they raced for positions. With two laps completed Redetzke worked on Eckhart for second. These two had the best race of the field for the next ten laps running side by side through the corners with Eckhart in the middle of the track and Redetzke working low. The middle groove ended up being preferred with Eckhart holding onto the second spot. Up front Herrick started working lapped traffic and with seven to go Herrick moved up to pass a slower car and ended up collecting the outside wall in three. Eckhart took command of the race with Nick Herrick moving past Redetzke for second and Lance Matthees working past Redetzke for third. A final caution with five to go saw Eckhart lead the field the rest of the way home for his first ever feature win in a WISSOTA Late Model. Unfortunately this was his last race in a late model as he will move back into the USRA Modified for the rest of this year and next season. Nick Herrick came home with second place and the 2007 track championship in the Late Models..
A huge field of 40 EZ Fabricating USRA Modifieds pulled onto the speedway for their final point race of the 2007 racing season. Mike Sorensen and Shawn Peterson paced the field to the green flag. After coming out of two Sorensen held the lead that he would never relinquish for the remainder of the event. Bob Timm quickly overtook Peterson for the second spot as the field raced all over the speedway. Tim Donlinger overtook Peterson for third with twenty to go from his seventh starting spot but the leaders were too far out front for him to garner any challenge. Brad Waits sat in fifth with Kelly Shryock challenging him for the position. Todd Scharkey sat soundly in fourth as Waits and Shryock raced for the fifth spot. Shryock eventually took the spot as the feature went green/white/checker. Sorensen took home the win while Timm took home the title of 2007 Deer Creek USRA modified champion.
Next up for the fans and drivers at Deer Creek Speedway will be the Baudoin Oil Labor Day Dual with the USMTS and the WDRL. WISSOTA Classes will return to action on the 6th of September as the Midwest Modifieds join the USMTS during the Featherltie Fall Jamboree.
