WILLY DECKER RETAKES POINT LEAD WITH THIRD DIRT MODIFIED VICTORY OF 2007 AT BREWERTON SPEEDWAY
BREWERTON, NY Willy Decker of Vernon did what he had to do on Friday night at Brewerton Speedway in the Westmoreland Golf Club No 1x car. Decker won the 35-lap DIRTcar Modified feature to retake the point lead from defending track champion Alan Johnson who struggled with a broken left front shock tower. Decker started in the sixth position and took the lead on lap 17 from Dan Vauter enroute to his $1,500 milestone victory, giving him an eleven point lead heading into the final night of points this Friday. Other winners were national point leader Dale Caswell in the IMCA Modifieds, Lowell Zehr in the ESDCA Mod Lites, Nathan Peckham in the Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Super Series, and Chuck Powelczyk in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks.
Sean Beardsley and rookie Kyle Lewis led the DIRTcar Modified feature down to the green flag, with Beardsley jumping out into the lead. Dan Vauter, who has struggled recently settled into second and set his sights on the lead. As the race wore on, the battle for the top five positions began to heat up with Beardsley leading, Vauter second, Chuck Bower third, Willy Decker fourth, and Kyle Lewis in fifth. On lap 16, Vauter led momentarily as the top three went three wide for the lead. Decker came out ahead the leader on lap 17 at the halfway point.
Decker had to hold off Vauter and Bower several times over the next 10 or so laps but he was just too strong for the competition. The determined driver led the remainder of the distance and raced to his third victory of the season. Bower settled for second at the finish, with Kevin Bates, Roy Bresnahan, and Kyle Lewis completing the top five. The remainder of the top ten was Jim Witko, Tom Juhl, Paul Kinney, Alan Johnson, and newcomer Ted Lamb Jr.
National IMCA Modified point leader Dale Caswell won his ninth Brewerton Speedway IMCA Modified feature event, his thirtieth overall on the season. Caswell came from the eleventh starting position to take the lead from Rob Keller Jr. at the halfway mark of the 20-lap event. Caswell held on for the remainder of the distance, with Keller forced to settle for second. Track point leader Kevan Cook was third, followed by Rich Townsend, and Pete Anderson. Bob Ridgeway led the opening two circuits until Keller charged to the top spot on lap 3.
Lowell Zehr has raced at Brewerton Speedway for many seasons now in the ESDCA Mod Lite division. Friday night, he finally broke through and won his first ever 20-lap feature event. The race was hotly contested from the start as Chuck DeMott led the opening lap until Barry Virts took command. Virts and Justin Crisafulli both led several times over the next 15 circuits, until Zehr took control on lap 17. Zehr, who started thirteenth, held on for the remainder of the distance, with Tod Simons in second, followed by Doug Williams, Kevin Doll, and Barry Virts. Four drivers led with six different lead changes in the exciting race.
In the 20-lap rain-delayed Mr. DIRTcar Street Stock Super Series event held over from June, Nathan Peckham used the pole starting position to his advantage to race to the victory. Blaine Smith, Scott Smith, Nick Rizzo, and Mike Schultz completed the top five finishers.
Chuck Powelczyk claimed the 15-lap victory in the 4-Cylinder Super Stock division. The victory was the fourth on the 2007 race season for Powelczyk, who started in the sixteenth starting position. Powelczyk claimed the lead on lap 8 when then leader Matt Wetterer broke. Claude Hutchings Jr. had to settle for second with early leader Aron Backus in third, Jessica Herbert in fourth, and Chris Kranz in fifth.
