Another week, Another 14 Year Old in Victory Lane
BROCKVILLE-2007 has become the year of the teenager at Brockville Ontario Speedway. For the second time in as many weeks, a 14 year old graduate from the go kart ranks making his fourth career Sportsman start emerged victorious at the fast quarter mile. Third generation pilot Matt Billings led all 20 laps for career win number one on Saturday night.
Billings started on the outside pole and had a full straightaway advantage when the first caution flag flew just past the half way mark. Late restarts didn't bother the youngster as he simply pulled ahead each and every time while everyone else battled for position behind him. Fellow teenager and defending track champion Chris Raabe made some nifty moves late to finish second and almost cement his title defense heading into the final points night of the season next week. Sheldon Hoogwerf, Chris Herbison and yet another youngster Shane Pecore rounded out the top five.
The best finish of the night came in the 30 lap 358 Modified feature as Danny O Brien passed Kyle Dingwall on last lap restart with a power move coming off turn 3 and 4 on the outside. It was the third win of the year for O Brien who took a stranglehold on year another season championship. Dingwall settled for second in front of Mike Adderley, Mark Hitchcock and early leader Andy Lloyd.
Dana Aikens tightened the chase for the Street Stock title as he grabbed his fourth checkered flag of the year. Aikens inherited the top spot when Bob Botting broke going into turn one and never looked back holding off a final lap challenge from a determined Steve Billings. Roger Hamilton was third, followed by points leader Billy Code and Barry Baker in his first appearance of the season.
It's been win or blow up it seems this season for Josh Kane. Kane held it together to dominate the 16 lap Rookie feature easily outdistancing early leader Pernie Banks. Bob Ray came up through the field late for a third place finish with Jessica Power and Gage Morin close behind. Ben Tucker blasted around Jason Powers around the halfway mark and pulled away for the win in the Vintage class event.
Brockville Ontario Speedway returns to action next Saturday evening, September 1st with the final points night of the 2007 season presented by the Brockville Recorder and Times. The 7 pm start will also be part of the kick off to this year's United Way campaign for Brockville and area.
