KEVIN NOUSE AND MARK SMITH SPLIT TWIN 20s
MECHANICSBURG, PA – Kevin Nouse and Mark Smith split the twin 20-lap features for sprint cars Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway.
Tommy Beavers led the first seven laps of the first feature before Chad Layton took over.
Nouse, who started ninth, followed Layton past Beavers and began to challenge for the lead. Layton managed to hold on until lap 17 when Nouse used an outside move off turn four in heavy traffic to take the lead.
Todd Shaffer, who started 13th, moved into the runnerup spot when Layton spun in turn two following an 18th lap restart.
Although he was unable to keep pace with Nouse, Shaffer settled for second at the finish.
Lucas Wolfe charged from the 19th starting position to finish third. Fred Rahmer came from 12th to fourth, Mark Smith from 21st to fifth and Greg Hodnett from 22nd to sixth.
Mike Erdley, Chris Meleason, Doug Esh and Clark Simonton, Jr. completed the top ten.
During the first two laps of the second feature, Meleason and Erdley swapped the lead five times, crisscrossing at every corner, before Erdley took control.
Smith, who started fourth, took second from Meleason on the fourth lap, then began to chase Erdley. He took over with an outside move off turn four at the halfway point.
Once in front Smith was never challenged as he rolled to his third victory of the season at Williams Grove.
He also earned the Hard Charger award from GW Signs for passing the most cars during the twin 20s.
Shaffer followed Smith across the line and dramatically increased his lead in the points race for the Cindy Rowe Auto Glass track championship.
Erdley settled for third ahead of Hodnett and Wolfe.
Brian Leppo, Esh, Meleason, Lance Dewease and Layton rounded out the top ten.
Heats for the 30 sprint cars in competition were won by Steve Buckwalter, Lance Dewease, Simonton and Alan Krimes.
Smith claimed the consolation race.
