Dussel, Hull and Anderson are Repeat Champions
(Lima, OH) As the 2007 season at Limaland Motorsports Park began its last night of racing, the season point championships in the Elwer Fence Sprints and Bud Thunderstocks were essentially decided. But, Terry Hull and Todd Sherman were in the same position they are always in; battling for the coveted title of Modified Champion.
The Professional Computer Company Modifieds were the first feature race of the night. Shane O'Connor held the early lead after a lap one spin by Todd Sherman. O'Connor was challenged for the lead by Darryl Banks by lap six and the two took turns at the point through lap thirteen. Banks assumed the lead with Hull on his tail with five to go. Hull worked the lowside first and then went to the top to snatch another victory in 2007 and secure the Modified championship. Sherman finished the race in fourth after blazing through the field in an effort to get back to the front.
The Elwer Fence Spints feature began with Luke Hall and Kent Wolters on the front row. On the second lap, Chris Andrews slammed the turn four wall and rode the rail before coming back down the track. Ron Blair tried to avoid Andrews and collected Nate Dussel who did a quick flip. All drivers walked away but only Blair could continue. Hall held the lead until a lap 8 restart. Gressman shot to the lead in turn two on his way to a fourth win at Limaland in 2007. Mike Dussel finished in fourth place to secure his second Championship in a row.
Kevin Gossard avoided an early race bumper car session which occurred when Jeff Babcock's car suffered mechanical problems on the first lap. Gossard, took the opportunity to put his car upfront and he never looked back. Fifteen unchallenged laps later, Gossard stood in victory lane knowing he had one more race to win, The King of the Quarter-Mile.
The King of the Quarter-Mile races (known as the "Kings") are the pinnacle of supremacy at Limaland Motorsports Park. To qualify, drivers have to win a feature in their respective divisions during the year. So, you take feature winners and line them up for 10 laps with all the cash on first place and you set the stage for some incredible action.
Brian Shaw made the trek from Illinois to take part in the Modified King race. Shaw started on the point but spun early handing the lead to Todd Sherman. It was only appropriate that Terry Hull was in second on the restart and once again, the two friends and competitors put on a show for the crowd. Sherman, winner of the past three Kings, was doomed. Hull had won championships, but the King had always eluded him. Not any more. Hull passed Sherman on lap eight and etched his name in Limaland's history book while collecting a $2000 check for his effort.
Luke Hall and Tim Allison started the Sprint King with their eyes on the $3000 prize. Both drivers hauled their cars into turn one as far as you could go before wrecking. Luke Hall emerged with the lead and pulled away as Dennis Yoakam and Allison battled for second. In his first attempt at the Sprint King of the Quarter-Mile, Luke Hall put his name on the board with the best in the business.
The Bud Thunderstock King of the Quarter-Mile had two of the greatest stock car driver's in Limaland's history, starting behind each other. Tony Anderson and his four championships would battle Jeff Babcock, the driver with the most wins in Limaland's history. Earnie Woodard made it very interesting as the green flag dropped. Anderson went to the point and Babcock to second. Anderson rode the cushion which forced Babcock to try and maneuver in the single lane between the cushion and the wall. Meanwhile, Woodard tried to slip in to Babcock's spot every time he tried to pass Anderson. For ten laps, Anderson expertly put his car exactly where he needed to and found himself in victory lane $1000 richer for his efforts.
Limaland Motorsports Park would like to thank the fans, race teams, and sponsors who supported us throughout the season. The historical 72nd season will be remembered as the benchmark season in our history for so many reasons. This year's level of competition, tight racing, huge crowds, and national exposure has cemented Limaland Motorsports Park's national reputation as the Premier Quarter-Mile Dirt Track in the country. For that, we are truly grateful. The work has already begun on the 2008 season and we look forward to seeing everyone in April.
